T40 palm rest keeps cracking in the same places

#1 Post by PsychBiller » Fri Apr 18, 2014 10:00 pm

I replaced the palm rest of my T40 2373-72U a couple of years ago due to cracking. The same problem has reappeared, which makes me think something else isn't quite right. The cracking is to the left of the upper TrackPad buttons, just below the left Alt key and the left edge of the space bar. Cracking is also re-occuring on the left edge just above the slot where one would insert a PCI card (which I don't have any of).

Does anyone know off the top of their head what's underneath these areas that seems to get so stressed? Yes, I could take it apart again, but perhaps one of you would be so kind as to save me the trouble?

I am not rough with the machine at all. I handle it with all reasonable care, and then some. It's my baby!

With the exciting news of the T50 mobos, maybe it would be worth replacing the palm rest again and hoping for the upgrade. I still have the original LCD panel, and it seems fine. If I want to watch a movie, I use my iPad.

If I could just run Windows 7 on this T40, I would be in heaven! I've got 2GB RAM and a 160GB HD, but my understanding is there are no drivers for the ATI 7500 GPU. A 1.8 Pentium M really doesn't have the horsepower anyway. :(
