T23 vs. T22 video and ...

#1 Post by Ted_E » Thu May 19, 2005 2:01 pm

Comparing mt T23 with my friends T22, we find:

I have an IBM ThinkPad T23 (2684-4RU) with:
Bus 1 (AGP), Device Number 0, Device Function 0
Vendor 5333h S3 Inc
Device 8C2Eh 86C583 SuperSavage/IXC SDR

My machine has 512MB RAM on a 1.2GHZ CPU. A good friend has a T22 with 384MB RAM on a 900MHz CPU. We are both running the eCS 1.2 version of OS/2 and/or W2000pro on mine, W98 on his. He get smooth play of a DVD on his, I get very jerky play on mine running the same software. Both of us have SciTech SNAP graphics drivers.

Can you suggest anything I might do to improve performance on my system?

Also, the eCS CPU usage graph on mine sits at about 60 to 70% even when I'm doing nothing while his sits at near zero. Anyone else observed similar "anomolies"?

That is strange. Both of you should have smooth DVD playback. Anything over a 300 MHz Pentium II can play DVDs without problems.

What happens if you try exchanging DVD drives? Maybe your drive is having problems reading the disk.

Could be the drivers, but I'd try eliminating hardware as the problem first.

Actually chances are that his DVD drive is set to DMA mode and yours to PIO, which would account for all the difference.

In W2K go into Device Manager and verify on Secondary IDE controller/Advanced Settings that it is set to DMA mode.
