T43 Build Quality

#1 Post by rxl77 » Fri May 20, 2005 6:59 pm

Just got my T43 (2687M3U), with 1.86, 512, 60gb, dvd burner, 14.1 SXGA

How's the build quality on yours? I'm not THAT impressed with it to tell you the truth... I feel like the body of the laptop is kinda plastic-y?

yea, the m3u is thinner compared to earlier models like the t23 i have....the t23 i have built like a tank...very strong...

on the other hand, m3u is lighter even it is so much more powerful...

what hd you have, is it 7200 or 5400?

I've got a 14" T43 and the build quality seems on par w/the T42's. I love how light it is
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

If anyone is still interested, my May 2005 T43 build quality is similar to my father's T40. Neither is quite like the "tank-like" quality of my T30. I think there are some difs between T40 and 43, but the 43 seems quite good to me.

On a related note, a friend of mine just got a Dell D600 for her summer project. I never really bought the "tank-like" talk about the thinkpads, especially when compared to some of the older machines, even the T30, which were rock solid. My 15" T42 has a lot of thin plasic, minor creaks and flexing, etc., but thankfully none where it counts (keyboard, LCD display).

The Dell on the other hand, feels like it's made of paper. The LCD cover is thin plastic - if you push it, it gives, right into and against the back of the lcd unit. You can flex/torque the entire LCD cover and it feels like it will break. Push the keyboard at any point and you get noticeable bowing/waving. The LCD hinge has a tremendous amount of "give" - move it to any position and you have 5-8 degrees of play before the tension of the hinge catches.

Gotta say, I have some SERIOUS, new respect for the IBM.

Oh yeah, every Dell I've used with a trackpad (I think they use Alps) has a few milliseconds of unnatural lag to it...extremely noticeable and distracting.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
