BSOD on NEW T43???!

#1 Post by rxl77 » Fri May 20, 2005 7:50 pm

I just got my T43 tonight, and after booting into it, I've been starting to get BSOD's. It reboots too quickly for me to copy down the error... just says Physical memory dump, etc, etc...

what the heck is going on? THis is a NEW laptop?!!

I am actually doing the IBM Restore REcovery on it, I have a feeling it could be the Norton ANtivirus 2005 it comes with?

I love the laptop otehrwise, but just want to get past this first.

I would think they test it before they ship it. Perhaps something got knocked loose in shipping like RAM or the hard drive. I'd always suggest reseating those if the recovery doesn't fix it.

If it's BSOD'ing straight from the factory with a virgin install, then it's definitely a hardware issue. However, if you've installed ANY software or changed any settings since getting them, that could also be the cause.

Strange thing was....
Mine blue-screened the first time I changed the video settings from 16 bit to 32 bit. Just out of curiosity, is your video still set to 16 bit. If so, just for grins, try changing it to 32 bit and see if your blue screens stop???

Could be something weird in the video drivers causing the blues-screen, assuming that it goes away when you change that setting.

Let me know if that changes anything for you.

It's not the Norton Antivirus causing it.
Norton has been called a "pig" of a program, but it won't crash a system completely.

If your system blue-screens quickly after booting without any time going by or your doing anything on the system, then it is likely going to have to be returned.

I too got my T43 this week. First time it booted I too tried to change video properties and it BSOD'd. I rebooted and it worked ok but it could not see the domain to join it.

I did a complete wipe with Rescue & Recovery back to factory install and it's been working fine since.

Try reseating the user-accessible hardware particularly the memory card(s). It could just be that one jiggled loose in shipping.

My T42p BSOD'd within a day of getting it as well. Personally, I've had this kind of thing happen with every computer I've purchased from HP, Dell, IBM, emachines, etc. The funny thing is they tend to "settle in" within a week and then run without problems.

Good luck.

Hey guys

I think it mite have been something I did. When I got the T43, I ran it off the AC adapter. Then I went to battery power, and plugged it straight into the Mini-Dock without turning it off. After that I started getting the BSOD's. So that's probably what messed it up... also I plugged in my external HD, my mouse, all seconds after plopping it into the Mini-Dock.

The BSOD's got so bad, that once I logged into Windows, it would give me a BSOD.

But after I did the recovery/restore feature, the laptop works absolutely fine. I did uninstall Norton right away this time, so that may help.

I am glad that you are not having BSOD's any more.
However, I don't know where the notion is coming from that Norton AV would cause them. It may be a memory "pig" as has been described, but it runs fine, and does not crash systems. It may slow systems down, but I am using it as I type and have no problems with it, and notice no slowness.
I am a network administrator, and the shop I work for has been running various flavors of Norton/Symantec AV for many, many years on many hundreds of notebooks, desktops, and servers. It has never crashed a machine or caused a BSOD that could be traced to it.

I do know that a lot of people say "get rid of Norton/Symantec" when you get a new system that comes with it. This is a matter of preference.
There may be better AV programs, but a properly configured Norton/Symantec installation works fine.

No, I don't work for, or know anyone that works for Symantec.

Just FYI.

Again, glad your issue is resolved!

Glad to see your problems fixed - I think if you go to "System Properties" -> "Advanced Tab" -> "Startup and Recovery - Settings" and untick "Automatically restart" the BSOD should remain on screen until you manually restart. This should give you enough time to write down some info on the offending process.

Cheers,
Rob.
