Upgrading from 2373AFU to 2373KTU with same hard disk?

#1 Post by GlobetrotterDoug » Fri May 20, 2005 8:36 pm

I just bought a new T42/p 2373KTU and am upgrading from a T41 2373AFU. No, it's not a big change but I needed a new laptop for my family but I want the new one! Rather thsn laboriously build the laptop with all my software and customized settings, I just popped the hard disk from my T41 into my T42/p, let the drivers update as needed, rebooted a couple fo times and it seems to work fine. Question: am I seriously comprimising long term stability by this shortcut approach? Thanks.

If the hardware is not too different, it may be ok. I always like new computers cause you can try to "build" the OS as much as you can for the hardware.

I always prefer a clean install to any kind of update, revive efforts.

XP is way more forgiving than Windows 98 was for this type of hard drive swap-in.
Chances are you will be fine.
One way to check is:
Reboot the PC into Safe Mode, go to Device Manager, and see if all of the components are properly identified, with no question marks, etc.

Check out this instructions for moving an XP install to a new MoBo.

I have tried this with no problems other than activation-related ones for MS and Adobe software.
