T42,Flickering pixels on windows background and DVD playback

#1 Post by thinkpadguy » Sat May 21, 2005 10:54 am

I am a newly owner of a T42 15" sxga, 2379-R9U and overall I am satisfied. But recently i discovered something strange in my display. In native resolution 1400x1050, 32bit color I sometimes see some red (on black background in desktop) moving and flickering clusters of pixels jumping around the display (ONLY on the desktop). In DVD- playback it's also there. The jumping pixels seems to invert the colors of the background in some sense.

Wandered if it was HW or SW problem.. and took a screndump with prtsrn. The inverted pixels are also included when saving it ie. to a bmp.
If a black box in paint is drawn, I see no flickering/jumping pixels there. Moving the paint window around seems to remove the red jumping pixels on the black desktop. -Guees i have to wipe them all out from time to time, then.

Then i tried in 16 bit colors and it dissapeared, but still visible on DVD-playback some times. Reducing the resulotion to 1280x768, 32 bit color did romove the problem... but cant live with that blurry display for ever.

It all looks like getting worse when playing DVDs

I am running my t42 as it leaved the factory plus Matlab7, firefox, winamp and Miktex. Havent done any driver updates yet.

Hopefully someone in here can helt me, since it's my last hope besides returning it, which I would hate the most.

Try the Omega drivers at www.omegadrivers.net

I Also had some problems with the standard ibm drivers.

well, things just getting worse.
When playing Swat 4, and halflife 2 I see alot of wrong polygons jumping around the screen. Some places they stick out of a wall or displayed as a triangle across the screen.

This must be some hardware error.. should I then return it? or can i trust IBM that they will find the error and replace the motherboard without ruin the whole mashine. what are the repair time at IBM?

If it is in 30 days, return it! The downside is you must wait some time to get another one. Otherwise, you will be bothered with any problems in the future. I have one T43 before, the fan bother me a lot. I returned it.

Looks like artifacts!

Return it... otherwhise they will have to replace the whole motherboard (since the GPU is located on the mobo)

I'd update the video drivers from the IBM driver website first. If that doesn't help, I'd bet it's the graphics card (which will require a motherboard swap out).
