Dual-Channel DDR2

#1 Post by JHaislet » Sat May 21, 2005 10:55 am

What's the consensus with dual-channel DDR2 on the T43/T43p?

It's my understanding that the Intel PM's @ 533mhz FSB have about 4GB/s of bandwidth between the CPU & memory controller (regardless if your running in single or dual channel mode).

Single channel DDR2 (PC2-4200) also has about 4GB/s as I understand it & dual-channel DDR2 has around 8GB/s.

So, is there ANY conceivable difference upgrading a single 1GB DDR2 sodimm to TWO 512MB DDR2 sodimm's if cost isn't an issue?

Also, does the dual-channel configuration introduce any more latency into the memory system over it's single channel counterpart?

Hello,
You're right. CPU isn't really able to use the bandwidth difference. Only the GM version of the chipset (with integrated graphics) will show a real difference. Because graphics really require this bandwidth.
I don't know about latency.
My opinion is to keep the 1GB module. You can see in my signature that i'm about to receive a T43p with this configuration. And i prefer keeping the liberty to upgrade the memory later (perhaps will 1GB memory in 3 years be comparable to 256mb today ???).
Hope i could answer a bit your question.
Have a nice week end

More memory is better than more memory bandwidth for what you're talking about. Buy a 1GB stick and put another one in later :P
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
