Intel BG vs Intel ABG vs IBM ABG T43

#1 Post by redrumchoy » Mon May 23, 2005 1:42 pm

Could someone elaborate on the differences? Whether or not it should be a huge or significant factor in the buying process in the T43?

Thanks in advance.

The intel 2200 BG has some problems with distance and power saving mode with some routers like linksys.

The IBM (atheros) II a/b/g card seems to be the better buy.

The Intel A/B/G is the 2915ABG, the next generation after the 2200BG. For what its worth, I never had a problem with my 2915ABG (T41 + no1802.com). The 2915ABG is a lot better than the 2100B.

PS: You can always change the card afterwards, so that should not be the biggest issue when deciding on which thinkpad to buy.

i have the intel here with Netgear router , no issues here.
but i think that a laptop with centrino sticker might have better re sale value.
just because of the hype of the Centrino (pure marketing B$ but it’s probably the case for the average buyer)

For the record, I've never had any issues with the Intel BG 2000 card - I'm using driver v8.1.0.28 and not the latest driver that has allegedly caused a few issues for some people.

I'll only update the driver once it appears on Windows update. I don't jump on the new drivers as and when they appear on the IBM website as drivers are often not tested fully IMO.

There was a thread on here about hacking the registry so the Atheros card would support Super G 108 mbps speeds (with super G routers/access points), but there never was confirmation in the thread that the hack actually worked. If it did, and you're interested in Super G, that would make the Atheros desirable. Here's the thread:
