I agree, even the video card in my desktop allows control of fan rpm's thru a slider bar in the management software.

Those who have seen the fan/heatsink assembly in the T42/T43 models, is the fan have a third wire capable of rpm reporting?

I guess if all else fails, it might be possible to attach some sort of inline resistor on the fan lead, or an additional thermal controller (inline) that can dynamically throttle the fan.

UPDATE

#32 Post by DaniWurf » Wed Sep 21, 2005 3:06 am

I have now tried to cool the component by putting a piece of 2 millimeter thick aluminum on it's top. The fan actually came on earlier after boot so it was a small disappointment for me...

I think the easiest and most safe way would be if IBM/Lenovo would raise the thermal threshold (where the fan kicks in) some degrees.

Has anyone got an e-mail address to the thinkpad developers at IBM/Lenovo? I would really like to contact them.

I just got an email from the IBM depot in Mechanicsburg, PA, that my M10 fan should be on the way. I'm hoping it'll get here tommorow! It should be here by friday at the very latest... Mechanicsburg isn't terribly far from where I am, and the only shipping option they would give me was overnight shipping.

I hope the M10 fan works solves the problems!

Keep us updated, as I'm very interested in what this does!

Thanks for all the info!

Guys, stop modding the hardware!

It IS already possible to CONTROL the FAN (at the moment, in linux only but it' s possible). There is a kernel module called ibm-acpi located at http://ibm-acpi.sourceforge.net/ which can control the FAN (turn on and off on the fly) and identifies 8 (eight) temperature sensors builtin the system! It is open-source so just get the right lines of code out there and post it to the coder of Centrino Hardware Control so that he can implement what we all want: User defined temperature-based FAN management.

Just someone has to do it.

I just installed the fan a couple minutes ago. Installation wasn't too bad. Will post results later tonight after running tests.

:)

whooa... If there are 8 different sensors it will be hard to mod the cooling system so that the fan doesnt trigger.

As far as manual fan control I dont think that is the optimal way to go for most people. Like on the desktop side there will be uncautious users burning their GPU/northbridge/whatever, resulting in costly warranty repairs. Maybe this is an argument we can use to make IBM/Lenovo push up the fan on/off threshold some fiveish degrees...

I used to have the same problem on my new T40p, which had this constant, pulsating fan.

I called IBM, they told me that they redesigned the old fan and that new systems would always be shipped with the long fan.

So I sent in my unit, got it back 3 days later and never had the fan problem anymore.

Changing the fan was under warranty, anyway. Just call IBM.

So why hassle with a software Beta that potentially could kill your motherboard (yep, I fried a dell Inspiron when working on some control software some time ago)

Well, I don't know if anybody has tried a T40p yet; but the fan utility has been tried, successfully, on everything from a T43p to the X41 Tablet, to the R series. I don't think that the, errr, Beta, will fry a T40p.
