Port Replicator and TP questions

#1 Post by arun » Tue May 24, 2005 5:38 pm

Guys,

1. What is the differences between Port Replicator II and a ThinkPad Mini Dock and ThinkPad Mini Dock II. Pros and Cons? Benefits of one or the other?

2. What do you think about this ThinkPad model, I am looking to purchase it.

2668-85U Pentium M 750 1.86 512MB 15.0" SXGA+ X300 40HS Combo ✳ Intel 11a/b/g Modem Finger Yes 915PM W Feb 05

Is it easy to buy/install aftermarket Bluetooth?
How much more would it cost to ask IBM to upgrade the HD to 60U?
Is the Fingerprint really worth it and will it last long?

Another options is the same computer with 14.1" SXGA+ screen.
Right now im running on a CRT 17inch .. usually at 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 .. I like to have real estate on my screen.

Everyone's thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The differences between the port replicator II and Mini-Dock II are small. The Mini-dock comes with a power supply, the PR uses the one you have. Mini-Dock also has 2 extra USB ports.

Aftermarket Bluetooth can be achieved through a PC Card solution. Look into the 3COM Bluetooth PC Card. Heard it's good.

Don't know about the upgrade - why not just pick a configuration that has the 60gb?

Fingerprint isn't worth it in my opinion. I have the T43 (2687D3U). It can never detect my fingerprint correctly, although it works if I setup it for my girlfriend. I guess I have bad fingerprints? Anyway, I find that typing in the password is fine with me. I don't like the fingerprint cuz it's a swipe, perhaps the next generation will be better where you can just push your print into the scanner and don't hafta move it. That will probablywork better.

Definitely get the SXGA - 14.1 will be lighter, 15.0 will be heavier and slightly bigger.

I thought you could just pop open the computer and put a bluetooth chip in. What you are saying need to by a pc card which use up one of the slots.

Is there any other way?

I think Im gonna skip the fingerprint reader.

Now my only questions is 14inch or 15inch screen. Is the weight substantial. My sister has a T41 with 14.1, the screen is ok.. but I feel like its small. Its running XGA.

Is it good idea just to get a TP with bluetooth in it?

Thanks everyone.

What are you going to use two slots for otherwise? I have never seen anyone use both slots. I'm sure it happens - but what are you worried about?

To add BT you need to replace the modem card - about $70
