IBM vs Other companies, IBM has more dead pixels?

#1 Post by Sanji » Wed May 25, 2005 1:21 pm

I got my IBM T42 last week and it has 2 dead pixels on the right hand side, so it isn't that obvious so I probably won't be returning it. I love the T42 but don't like dead pixels... I spent good money on a laptop that was not perfect.

My question is, do other laptop companies have the same problems in terms of dead pixels on their screens? I have not heard as many problems with dead pixels from companies like Fujitsu, Sony...

If this is true, I think it is time for IBM to either choose a different LCD panel company or do more quality control...

What do you guys think?

I've bought eight Thinkpads. One had three dead pixels. The others were perfect.

1 out of 8 isn't too bad. I guess I was in one of those 8 :(

1 out of 8 is 12.5%. That seems pretty bad on 2nd thought...

IBM gets their panels from companies like Samsung and LG. These are the same companies that sell panels to Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. I believe that the pixel defect rate is about the same across all manufacturers.

Yes, it sucks having bad pixels. I have 1 stuck red and one partially stuck blue, and it is pretty irritating if I am doing something graphical and the pixels stick out.

I'd say return the unit if the pixels are irritating.

Guys, I have some stories to share:

My old Emachines has several clusters of dead pixels, every clusters has about 20 dead pixels. There are several dad pixels in other places. This happens after one year warranty!

My friends Dell has a line of dead pixels in the left screen. It happens after one year.

My old apple (ibook) has one green dean line in the upper screen. I happens after two years.

My old acer has one dead pixel, it is not bad since I have used it for 5 years! I carried it with me all over the world!

chbone,

Your post made me think about the very good chance that companies put more effort into their computers that have extensive warranty's. Reduced warrantys call for reduced quality control. Makes sense; offer a nice warranty that never needs to be used only turns a profit.

These are the conditions where IBM/Lenovo will replace a display with bad pixels:

I've heard some stuff about massaging the LCD screen?

Has anyone had any luck with LCD screen massage on the thinkpads in fixing dead pixels???

Sounds almost bogus, but I looked it up and some people say it works.

Think I should try? I don't really know how hard to "massage" the screen.

well, first you would need to find the right music. anything romantic would work in this situation. since the screen is pretty sensitive you don't want to use any massage oils. next place the laptop on it's back and begin to work around the sides. (you want to use your finger tips)...oh, wait wrong subject...

I think massaging the screen might make it worse...I've heard about that too...but, I really doubt it would work...never had the guts to try it on any LCD I've had with dead pixels as all the dead pixels I've had seem to be in places where it doesn't matter.

Haha good reply GoEatFood

Yeah, I think I am not going to risk it. Sounds like a LCD Massage would cause more damage than good.

Oh well, I guess there is no cure for dead pixels...except replacing the screen which would cost ~400 dollars: http://www.lcds4less.com/ibm-laptop-display.shtml
and praying the replacement screen has no dead pixels...

Heck at 400 dollars you might as well buy another thinkpad.
