automate thinkpad Fn+F7 action

#1 Post by Kurdt » Tue Dec 02, 2014 3:08 am

keyboard Fn+F7 seems to be bios controlled, windows can not control it, but there must be some process/thread triggered each time you hit keys. i have tried multimonitortool and 12noon display changer tools, but Fn+F7 is stronger, forces switching even if second display is not enabled in software. i need it to automate it, i want thinkpad to switch to external display each time winxp starts. maybe some registry keys can do?

This works on my T41 (BIOS version 3.23) and probably should work on any other T4x system:

- Access the BIOS menu (press and hold F1 while turning on)
- Config/Display/Boot Display Device: set it to Analog (VGA)
- Press the F10 key and save configuration

As long as you have an external monitor connected to the VGA port, the system will boot and the only active display will be on the external monitor. You may not see the IBM "splash screen" but the Windows start up screen should be visible. No software is needed, nor are any registry changes. If you boot the system with the external monitor disconnected, the laptop's LCD will become active (no need to manually hit Fn+F7). When you re-connect the external monitor and boot the system again, the LCD will be disabled and the external monitor enabled (again, no need to press Fn+F7).

However, if at any time you press the Fn+F7 key combination will may have to go back into BIOS and reset the Boot Display Device back to Analog (VGA).
