need m/b for a T43

#1 Post by mikeh420 » Wed Dec 10, 2014 10:04 pm

I have a T43 Type 1875-DMU 15" that needs a motherboard. It is a 39T5574. Are there any alternative FRU's that will work with this system, or is that the only one?

Thanx

No, any board from T43/R52 with Intel graphics will be plug & play.

An ATi-based board will require a different heatsink, but that's all.

Is there a difference between 14" and 15" systems as far as m/b's go?

No. They are fully interchangable.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

There's a list of all the different motherboards for T43/R52 on my website: http://theboardroom.info/ibm_list.htm

I noticed some of the boards don't work with the 15" UXGA displays. How do I know which 15" display I have?

You have a 15" XGA panel. Intel boards on T43 range (model numbers starting in 187*) can't drive anything above SXGA+, and these were available only on custom-ordered units.

In the process of disassembling the T43, I found that there is no backup (CMOS) battery. Would this make it not function at all?

modded bios

#12 Post by mikeh420 » Thu Dec 18, 2014 1:45 pm

How reliable is the modded bios for the T43, as posted on Thinkwiki? I'm setting up the T43 for a friend and I don't want him to have any problems.

thanx

If I am unable to get an "approved" drive, I want it to work for my friend without problems. Nothing fancy, just MS Word, web browsing, etc.

If you don't have or want to use an approved HD, you MUST use a modded BIOS.
The ones made by TTAV134 (from MDL) are all reliable and have been used numerous times.
I must have personally applied it probably well over 100 times!

Just installed the new motherboard, still no go. You can hear the drive spinning up, but no HDD light flashing, the fan works, and it shows as charging the battery, but no display.

Is there anything else I can check?

Remove all the RAM and power it on. Does it beep?

Well, the board that doesn't beep with no RAM installed is a dead duck in 99% of the cases.

Try unplugging the LCD and check for beeps again.

Try swapping the CPU if you have a spare.

Good luck.

Since the new board didn't come with a CPU, I used the one on the old board.

I'll try unplugging the LCD. If that's not it, I'll use the CPU from my T42, I know it works.

In 99 out of 100 cases a T40/T41/T42 CPU does NOT work in a T43.
No LCD output is quite often caused by a bad fuse (and no sound if the speakerbar is not plugged in...).
On the same mobo-page on my website you can also find a PDF with all the T4x fuse locations.
Check them out.
And if you bought that mobo on eBay, return it for a refund.

If it were the display that's bad, wouldn't there still be HDD activity as it boots up? There's none.

You asked for more options...
As far as I'm concerned, you got a dud mobo, most likely with a loose Southbridge.
Personally I wouldn't waste any more time trying to fix it, and return it for a refund/working replacement.

So IBM restricts which model CPUs will work like they do HDDs?

Yes and no. Sort of...

Any PATA/IDE laptop drive WILL work in a T43/p, you'll just get the error message on boot.

CPU is either compatible with a certain chipset, or it's not. Nothing to do with IBM and everything to do with Intel.

39T0324 is a T43 mobo with Intel graphics.
Maybe your T42 CPU is faulty and wrecks each motherboard you put it in?
Why not get a T43-suitable CPU, such as any of these:
Pentium M 730 SL86G 1600 MHz
Pentium M 740 SL7SA 1733 MHz
Pentium M 750 SL7S9 1866 MHz
Pentium M 760 SL7SM 2000 MHz

same symptoms as the previous board, no display, nothing on external monitor, no HDD activity but it is spinning, only power LED and battery LED are lit up. Caps Lock and Num Lock LEDs light up for a second then they go off. Cooling fan is spinning.

I'm using the same 740 CPU as was on the original board, my T42 has a 735 CPU, will it work in the T43?

this board is replacing the original 39T5574 board, also with a Intel GPU
