Re: need m/b for a T43
A bad CPU will have board behave as a corpse. No sign of any life whatsoever.
I can send you a *tested good* T43 CPU if you run out of other options...with that said, I would tend to believe that your problem is elsewhere.

I was planning on getting a CPU, but if you have one that is known to be working, I'm definitely interested.

Re: need m/b for a T43
Since you need it primarily for testing purposes, get the cheapest one...which would be PM 750 (1.86GHz) for $3 + shipping...I've got better ones as well, but these can be discussed once you actually have a working machine...
PM me and we'll take it from there...

Re: need m/b for a T43
Besides the CPU, another part I've used on both boards is the keyboard. It also has 2 broken keys, right-cursor and the one to the right of it, I believe it's "next web page". Could it cause the problem? Also using the same modem card and same WLAN card. I can't think of anything else.

Re: need m/b for a T43
Well, you can remove the modem and wireless card while testing...as for the keyboard: do you have another pre-T6x keyboard that you could plug in to test?

Re: need m/b for a T43
I tried it without the keyboard, using the dock station power switch to power up, still same result.ajkula66 wrote:Well, you can remove the modem and wireless card while testing...as for the keyboard: do you have another pre-T6x keyboard that you could plug in to test?
I checked my T42 keyboard, and it has a fourth threaded post and won't fit, the T43 only has three. Since the T43 keyboard has missing keys I had planned to get another one anyway.

Is all of this with or without the LCD assembly hooked up?mikeh420 wrote:

You don't need to actually install the T42 keyboard, just lean it on the machine and power it on...I checked my T42 keyboard, and it has a fourth threaded post and won't fit, the T43 only has three. Since the T43 keyboard has missing keys I had planned to get another one anyway.

Re: need m/b for a T43
I get the strong impression that either you have a bad CPU or you are consistently doing something wrong.
Take the mobo out of the chassis and lay on a flat table, e.g. on a big piece of carton, insert CPU, tighten the CPU-screw, apply thermal paste, attach fan with 3 screws, insert fan power-connector, attach the yellow DC-connector, connect speaker set, attach the VGA-connector strip, insert memory, attach keyboard, connect external LCD to VGA port, attach AC adapter and plug in.
Switch on. What happens?

Re: need m/b for a T43
That's pretty much the order I am assembling it in, I using the Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Manual for reference. I've tried it stripped of HDD, DVD, modem, WLAN card, memory one slot full, two slots full, none at all, LCD disconnected, no keyboard. Seems all that's left is the CPU.RealBlackStuff wrote:I get the strong impression that either you have a bad CPU or you are consistently doing something wrong.

Definitely not new at this, 20+ years of PC and IBM AS/400 setup and maintenance experience, with 10 years of electronic assembly/QC experience before that

Re: need m/b for a T43
From that table-set, only remove all ram, then try to boot.
It should beep 1-3-3-1.
If not, you might have yet another dud motherboard.
I still say: get another CPU.

My money is on the CPU too; all three boards, the original and the two I bought all exhibit the same symptoms. I could see two, but three is not very likely.

It was the CPU after all. Just got a 740 CPU today, Windows is loading now. Had to use my T42's DVD, the one in the T43 wouldn't open.

Re: need m/b for a T43
Just installed the BIOS update (70ET69WW), it ended with beeping and an error message and in RED:
"ERASE FLASH MEMORY BLOCK FAILED", then "Use IBM Crisis diskette"
Scared the crapola out of me, but I rebooted the system and everything works, the 2010 error is gone.
