Integrated Bluetooth IV w/56K Modem & T40... no Bluetooth??

#1 Post by Arf the Lab » Thu Dec 11, 2014 11:02 pm

Hello.

I purchased the IBM Integrated Bluetooth IV with 56K Modem (BMDC-3) card, and installed it in my T40 after using the "no1802" patch.
I installed the Integrated modem drivers for the T43. And, while the card works fine as a dial-up modem, it's not detected as a Bluetooth device by the ThinkPad Bluetooth software.
Though the card is properly connected to a Bluetooth antenna, I've read that even without an antenna connected, the card should still be detected as a Bluetooth device.

The whole reason I bought the card was to add Bluetooth functionality to my T40.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I'm surprised that you're not getting the "1803" - no, not the "1802" - error on boot.

You either have a defective card on your hands, or the machine is simply unable to recognize it even at BIOS level.

A safe bet would be to get a card that matches the T40, they can't be more than a couple of bucks nowadays. But before you do that, let us know the following:

Does anything happen when you press Fn+F5?

Have you tried booting from a "live" Linux CD to see whether the card is recognized there?

If I absolutely can't get this one working then I'll be happy to buy a different one -- if someone can confirm without a doubt which Bluetooth-enabled CDC card(s) indeed work with a T40.

I just figure I have the wrong, or incomplete drivers installed. Unless you're right, and the Bluetooth functionality isn't recognized by the BIOS. That would make sense.

No.

No. I don't have one handy and as I'm on a dial-up connection, downloading one would take ages.

There's got to be a couple of them in the HMM. Do the research and post the FRUs, I should have some lying around.

D'oh, I didn't realize the HMM included a list of compatible hardware. I never looked beyond the card replacement instructions that I needed.
In this case I had simply trusted what I read somewhere else on the internet, a guy saying the Bluetooth IV card worked in his T40. My mistake.

Anyway according to the HMM only the original Integrated Bluetooth (BMDC) is compatible with the T40.
I picked one up online for 3 bucks. That's about what the IV cost if I remember correctly.
So, no biggie.

Thanks for the help. An easy solution, thankfully.

The BMDC arrived. And I'm having the exact same problem with it: modem works fine, Bluetooth isn't detected.
I've installed bthwxp1o.exe, the "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II Software" from the T40 drivers page.
Right hardware, right drivers. So why isn't it working? :(

For BT in the T4x you also need an antenna to connect at the downside of that modem/BT card.
I assume you have that antenna?

T40 and T41 drivers are the same on D/L.
On the T42 drivers-page there's an additional file.

Microsoft Bluetooth Support file for the Integrated Bluetooth III for Windows XP Service Pack 1 - ThinkPad R51 (Models 1829, 1830, 1831, 1836 only), T42, T42p, X40 ... Learn more

Maybe try that?
Which OS are you using, XP?
