T42 won't power on

#1 Post by arabianights » Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:37 pm

hi,

I've got a thinkpad t42 that won't power on. i disassembled the laptop and trying to figure out what went wrong: tried the method of applying some pressure on the ATI graphics chip, and push the power button. but nothing happened.

the model no. is type 2373-9vu. i tried to find the exact specs on Lenovo's website but isn't successful.

anyway to fix it?

thanks

Try this old trick:

Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, hard and media drives.

Press the "power" button ten times in a row, holding it down for ten seconds each time and thirty seconds the last time around.

Plug the AC adapter - but nothing else - back in and try to power the system on.

Good luck.

above method isn't working.

thanks for the specs! can you tell me how you find it?

if i were to buy a replacement moB, should i buy an exact match of my motherboard 2373-9vu?

it also has a FRU P/N 91P8927, what does this mean?

One more thing to try: remove all the RAM and power the system on. Does it beep?

Well, you can buy any board from a T4x/R5x system with ATi graphics - not including T43/p and R52 - but given that yours had ATi 9600 GPU which is fully supported in Vista and W7 I'd go with the same GPU or move "up" to a "p" board with ATI Fire GL T2.

It really depends on how fast you want the board replaced and what you are looking to spend.

Good luck.

thank you, sir!

that helps a lot!

most likely the ATI chip turned bad in my case, I will buy a replacement MoB.
