annoying rescue and recovery popup

#1 Post by gevaudan » Sat May 28, 2005 7:52 pm

Hello all, I'm a long time reader of this forum, but a very new poster. With that said, I recently purchased an IBM T42 (2373-N3U) back in April and so far couldn't be happier. I purchased the T42 because I felt that it was one of the few durable laptops that can withstand me working, playing, and traveling with it a minimum of 60 hours a week.

With that said, there has been one aspect of the T42 that I am very dissapointed in. Ever since I purchased my laptop, I've noticed that when I turn on the computer from a powered off state to a powered on state I get an annoying Rescue and Recovery popup that asks me to change my Rescue and Recovery password. There are three options to this dialog, and it mentions in the instructions that if you were not changing your windows password, to press the Cancel button. I've done this, and even tried choosing the other three menu options to no avail. Off the top of my head, one of the options says to set a different windows password, the other is to set the r+r password to the existing windows password, and the other was to set a password later.

Out of frustration, I even did a recovery to the factory state about a month ago but still, the blasted popup reappears. Keep in mind, this is only when going from a powered off state to a powered on state and does not occur when restarting the computer.

I talked with IBM about this and they mentioned for me to update my BIOS and uninstall/reinstall Rescue and Recovery. Well I did this, but still no luck. Last time I talked with them, they gave me the numbers of two local IBM service dealerships in my area but upon calling them, none of them currently offer their services to members of the private sector.

I was hinted by IBM tech support that this is likely an issue with the IBM security chip which is embedded in the motherboard. At the moment, I can't afford to be without my laptop and so I haven't decided whether this annoyance merits me asking them to replace the motherboard (~ $850). That's why I haven't followed up on this support ticket quite yet.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, or can anyone provide a few troubleshooting steps for me to take. Thanks!

Had the same problem as well. This probably isnt the solution you're looking for, but I just uninstalled R&R.

That's what I will probally end up doing rather than to have to send off the laptop for such a trivial quirk. Anyone else?
