Adding a fingerprint reader?

#1 Post by hurog » Tue May 31, 2005 1:05 pm

I removed the stickers from the keyboard bezel of my T42. Naturally, they left a buch of glue behind, and I stupidly reached for my bottle of "goof-off". Dumb move -- it dissolved the plastic on the keyboard bezel. It certainly functional, but I have a "smooth" spot where my stickers used to be which looks pretty funky.

So, I'm looking to replace the keyboard bezel. My Thinkpad (2379DYU) didn't originally come with a fingerprint reader. If I purchase a bezel WITH the fingerprint reader, can it be hooked up to the motherboard on my machine?

Also, does anyone know where I could get the bezel (other than ebay?), and how much it would cost?

Thanks a bunch!

When I removed my stickers, the only bits of residue left on the plastic could be removed by dabbing them with the sticky side of the removed sickers themselves. Also, warming up the stickers with a hairdryer for a few seconds before removing them helps as well.

Now, since none of that will help you at this point, IIRC word on the street is that you an order a palmrest with the fingerprint reader (from IBM), and that it will fit your non-reader thinkpad just fine as it uses the same connector. But you won't get the fingerprint functionality because that actually requires some specific hardware on the system board that you don't have

Thanks Ken!
Yes, I feel dumb. And I think that "palm rest" is probably a more accurate term for the plastic panel in question, thank you.

For the record, OTHER than plastic, Xylol is a great solvent (I use it in my shop all the time!) Cuts almost anything, and leaves little residue!

Actually, it's only called a "palmrest" for the 14" T-series, since that part is separate from the rest of the keyboard bezel. I'm not sure, but I think on the 15" the single piece of plastic that includes the bezel and the palmrest is actually called the "keyboard bezel" or something similar :)
