R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
As I have finished my T43 UXGA project (very clean and very late T43p with "ThinkPad" sticker and with T43 motherboard and wonderful IPS UXGA screen: http://1drv.ms/19k4UB2) I am looking around for another project:
Donor is R52 with plastics in very bad shape but with fully working internals (mobo, HDD, ...):
- R52 motherboard (Intel GPU) (15")
- CPU Pentium M 740/750
- RAM 2GB DDR2 533/667MHz
Acceptor:
- ThinkPad T41 unit (14")
- 1024x768 display
- deffective motherboard (laptop will not start)
Is this mix going to work? As I have found that R52 unit fully working but with dirty chassis and T41 not working while chassis and plastics are in mint condition, the result would be nicely running T41/R52 hybrid in mint condition.
Thanks.

You'll be fine.
If the R52 planar has a FireWire port you'll just have to unplug the connector prior to the swap.
Happy FrankenPadding.

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
Thanks. I should have some few parts tomorrow (R52) and T41 is on its way to me.
As the R52 deploys Intel graphics, am I fine with the long CPU fan? I realize the GPU part of the heatsink will 'fly' over the motherboard for no reason. But I have no short fan. Do I need to provide the cooling also for north bridge chip where the graphics is integrated?
Thanks.

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
Finally I got 2x T41 donor units. One is with an XGA LCD, second is very clean T41 with SXGA+. Is the SXGA+ LCD assembly going to work with that R52 Intel board? I know that there were some R52 units made by IBM with the 15" SXGA+ LCDs but I am not sure with the 14" LCD. Thanks.

14" SXGA+ LCD will not work with an Intel-based R52 board.lukee wrote: Is the SXGA+ LCD assembly going to work with that R52 Intel board?

In the meantime, I have been googling a little and found this post here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 16#p557968
It should work using modded LCD cable, right? At least, the user reports his 14" SXGA+ LCD is working fine with R52 Intel board after the mod.

It's been so long that I've completely forgotten about that thread...lukee wrote:In the meantime, I have been googling a little and found this post here:

From my recollection, that's the only time I've heard about anyone getting that combination to work. If you have the time, skills and patience you could give his approach a shot, you've got nothing to lose.
Good luck.

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
From what I've read, the mod was tested (and proven to work) on an R52 with ATI graphics, and never on an Intel GMA board.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M
In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
axur: By reading the thread carefully, I need to say you are correct. The user does not mention he has ATI board, but states he has no T43/R52 Intel board available for testing, thus he done the mod for 99% on R52 ATI board. Bad news for me - I was looking forward to have pretty nice and cool 14" T52 hybrid with an SXGA+ screen.

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
There's nothing in that thread that says that the mod won't work on an R52 Intel board. The guy who did the mod didn't have an Intel R52 and didn't want to buy one just to test if it works.
Though to be safe, grab a spare motherboard and LCD cable if you intend to try it.

He's not going to blow anything. There will be no picture on a lit screen, that's all.axur-delmeria wrote:There's nothing in that thread that says that the mod won't work on an R52 Intel board. The guy who did the mod didn't have an Intel R52 and didn't want to buy one just to test if it works.

Will R52 Intel board drive 15" SXGA+ FlexView from T43?

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
Yes, but only with a proper SXGA+ IPS cable (unless you modify it).
The standard (non-IPS) SXGA+ cabel as used in R52 will NOT do it.

Re: R52 mobo to T41 14" chassis?
I mean with the complete T43 SXGA+ IPS assembly (including cable). Friend of mine has my former T43p with 15" SXGA+ (don't be surprised with this combination - it is custom unit) and his machine seems started to suffer from the GPU issue. As I have got 2x spare R52 Intel boards I have offered one piece to him, so we would just swap original T43p board with the R52 with Intel graphics. LCD assembly will remain same.
