Is the DVI output on the Port Replicators DVI-D ?
Just looking for a new IBM to replace my T30, but want something I can run at 1920x1200 on a 23" TFT without it being analog ? T43p seems to fit the bill, but I'm nervous about the actual type of DVI output for which I can't seem to find an answer (with the x300 graphics option in mind)..
My intuition is telling me that the internal display is probably fed from the whatever the video cards normal DVI-D output would be ?
Can anyone put me right on this ?
Past experience running TFTs off analog inputs has been dissapointing, slight blurring, and non-sharp edges etc..
Port Replicators - DVI output ?
By default, all computer-grade DVI ports are DVI-D, since they are generally driving digital monitors. Of course, DVI-A was probably used initially, or there may be a reason to use an analog device off a DVI-A for someone, somewhere, using a graphics card that supports this config, but at least as far as the ThinkPads are concerned, the port on my Dock II and on the Replicators I've seen, it's DVI-D. How do I know? Well, there are pictures at the link below, and I compared them to what's on my Replicator. lol Here's a link to a site that will explain the differences between DVI-A (analog), DVI-D (digital), and DVI-I ("integrated" or, both analog and digital), and single/dual link DVI for large screen TVs, multiple monitors, etc.

The rub, for you, andym00, will be whether or not the X300 driver set will support wide aspect (1920x1200) or even 1600x1200 resolutions through the DVI port. Reports are that the X300 and V3200 will support higher than 1280x1024, but on all T42/T42p and earlier ThinkPads, the highest resolution you could drive from the DVI is 1280x1024 unless you use ATI Omega Drivers (modded Catalyst) or one of the other modded ATI driver sets to be found on the Internet. So ask around, as there are quite a few folks here who are running the modded driver sets for the higher DVI output and for gaming performance. If the X300 won't support it natively, you'll have to decide if you want to go with what the factory drivers can support, or if you want to walk on the wild side of modded drivers. lol Bottom line: it CAN be done.
