CTO notebooks and IBM model number

#1 Post by Phil_C » Thu Jun 02, 2005 9:12 am

If you order a CTO open bay TP like the 2687-EJU and customize it, does the final model number change based on the components you add?

If not, does this affect the operation of the Software Installer or other utilities that might depend on the internally stored model number?

Hey Phil
I've got a 2373-Y4M which is based on a 2373-CTO. The main difference ist that it came without OS. With Win XP Pro running the latest version of Software Installer updates automatically via internet. The version before brought messages saying that there is nothing (no matching items!) on the server but recognized and installed drivers on my hdd. Now its working really smooth so it seems to check OS, model number and/or components. I did not have any other complaints about IBM utilities. Everything works fine.

Hope this helps a little...

Cheers
Fred

Thanks for the info. I wanted to be sure I would not lose the benefits of the excellent Software Installer.

Did you install your own OS and accessories, or did you use the "add options" during purchase to have IBM install everything?

Hey Phil

the 2373-Y4M is coming without Win XP Pro (but a DOS licence?). IBM gives following components:

Product: ThinkPad T42p 2373-Y4M [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 2373-CTO: P M 745, 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HDD, 15 UXGA(1600x1200) TFT LCD, 128MB ATI FireGL T2, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, DOS license

So I put in my original Win XP Pro CD (given from university via MSDNAA) and installed. I downloaded drivers and utilities on my old machine, burnt them on CD and ran the SoftwareInstaller (old version!). It detected the stuff on CD but could not get any results from the internet connection (see above) probably because there where no drivers linked to my model purchased without OS. The installation of the drivers from CD worked as well with the old version, just the drivers had to be checked and downloaded manually.
No, with the latest version everything works well. Very happy with my machine so far (including fan!)

What is a CTO model? What does the acronym "CTO" stand for?
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

CTO = Configure To Order.

I.e., bare units devoid of OS, HD, optical drive, memory, etc., etc. that are built to order.
