New Twist to T-Series or PowerBook Dilemma
So I waited today before deciding whether to get a ThinkPad or a PowerBook for my new law practice. I considered the latter because of OS issues with Windows, but I'm sensing VirtualPC would be an awkward, if not forced, implementation of an OS that's needed to run the practice management/billing/accounting software I've chosen. To make a long story short, I've decided to opt for the T-series TP, so I can run my software smoothly. The question is, "Which one?" I'm looking to get a powerful, bang-for-the-buck system that could run the new, just-announced Mac OS X for Intel processors. I'm considering the T42 models GVU, R9U, M3U or the popular (on this forum) DXU. I've got a relative who's hooked me up with EPP. Any suggestions on a T42/43 that could possibly handle multiple OSes (including Longhorn, if it ever comes out)?
I think you missunderstand how the new Mac OS X for x86 will work. As far as I know you will not be able to just install Mac OS X on a standard PC, you will still need a MAC system which will most likely have proprietary components and only a specific set of hardware (for driver reasons as well as compatability). Also this new OS X will not be avilable until at least 2006 so if you really want an intel based MAC, you should probably wait at least 6 months.
On a related note I just recieved my T42 2373-M3U about 2 weeks ago now and the machine is pretty much amazing. Its light, fast and has great battery, and its even able to play a few games here and there. Even the fingerprint reader is really neat although I don't really need the extra security. As for the DXU I've never handled the 15" T42 myself but I think the 14.1" is nice with the high res, a good compromise between size and weight/batt life.

Another update, it looks like the 10.4.1 preview version that is shipping will be arriving in two weeks and is a developer version. You'll probably need a development system to run it and there is not likely to be much software. This release is most likely for software developers to begin porting their software to the new architecture so it will be ready for the roll out next year. Here's to hoping that it'll run on the T42, imagine dual booting XP and OS 10.4 on that baby

H'm, Windows might run on an Intel based Powerbook after all. Go to the second page and scroll down:

Perhaps it all comes down to whether or not Jobs really wants to go for the jugular and take Microsoft on. If Apple chooses to compete on the same platform as Windows, Jobs is taking an incredible gamble. I for one, hope someday they go for it....

most people seem to think you're still gonna need a mac box to run mac. though there was previously a developer version of mac that did run on normal PCs, it was never released commercially. i wouldn't hold out much hope for macs running on PC! in any case, there's little reason to do so, especially with the compatibility issues with hardware to think about.
think about it: xbox 360 runs on PowerPC: does that mean you can install OS X on it?
although i look forward to the day i can really test a win and mac pc side-by-side, i'm afraid it won't come. i really don't see why some people are so insistent on running the mac, though
i've always found win easier, more customizable, and more consistent. although less elegant and pretty, of course.

Word has it from Apple that only Intel-based Macs made by Apple will be able to run the new version of MacOS X from the Marklar program. For a year or two, at least, I've decided to lengthen my hiatus from the Macintosh platform and turn my attention to a ThinkPad. As far as a game machine goes, I'm probably get the XBox 360, though that decision could change if Sony can get its act together as to online gaming.
