Thinkpad T23 dropped on the floor....

#1 Post by regmysellf » Thu Jun 09, 2005 10:06 pm

Hi
I own a Thinkpad T23 and today my mistake i dropped it on the floor.
I tried to boot it but it shows nothing on the screen. I then tried to connect an external monitor and got no signal. The only thing that happens is that the fan is moving in a periodic motion like first and then fast and it keeps on doing that. The power LED goes on but the keyboard is notresponding. I tried the technical support but they said that the system board has been broken and needs to be fixed. Personally i am not conviced of that.
Any help in this matter will be appreciated.
Thanks

I assume it's probably not under warranty?
About the only thing you can do is pull up the disassembly diagrams (on ibm.com) and take it apart; looking for anything that might have popped loose during the fall (reseat the cpu, ram, hdd, ect).

Note that if you have to replace the mainboard, it might be cheaper just to replace the whole computer.

I haven't seen a mainboard for your specific computer, but I did see the pricing on a T40 mainboard and it was around $700. It might be cheaper if your CPU isn't soldered onto the board, but probably not much cheaper.

Look on eBay, mainboards listed for T23s are selling from $90 to $170.

The system board is definately bad. When they are dropped a certain resistor comes loose which causes the exact problem you are describing.

A replacement board can be had for under $200.

thanks a lot for the reply.
I guess I'll probably sell it on ebay since its not worth getting repaired.

What's the model number/specs? I might be interested.

BTW, I've heard you can get more $$ on eBay if you part it out rather than sell it as broken.

Sometimes... Broken T23s are going for around $250 on eBay right now- not bad for getting rid of it in one shot...

Well, it is a $500 laptop- it is up to you if it is worth getting repaired or not... If you have been thinking of a new one, now may be the time...
