Request for some general maintenance info on my T42

Hello,

I'm new to owning a laptop and have a few questions about this T42 I've been running.
1. I'm used to doing clean reinstalls on my desktops every so often to clean up general windows bugs and get a fresh start. Is that a dangerous thing to do with this machine? I don't really understand what backup files are already on the system and how one would go about doing that. And if I need to move all of my data to another system beforehand.

2. I tried out the Rapid Restore Ultra software to backup an image of my HDD. I think it must be taking up a huge amount of space and I'd like to get rid of it. The software doesn't seem to offer any options for removing the backup file and I don't want to delete anything important. Also the option to exclude folders from the backup doesn't show any of the folders on the drive.

3. Any other opinions or ideas on general maintinance of this device. I'm a little nervous by how non transparent the system seems to be. The IBM help doesn't seem to give any solid information. And I really don't want to get a PhD in how this thing is setup.
