T42p with 2.10 GHz Pentium: Is the FSB/volt-mod feasable?
T42p with 2.10 GHz Pentium: Is the FSB/volt-mod feasable?
i'm in the market for another txx thinkpad , with 15 inch screen and fast enough to support base nowdays operation .
I've yet one t43p but i need another one , i found a t42p with 15'' 1600 lcd . I've read somewhere the pc can be voltage/fsb modded . Is it easy/feasable ?

It's a pinmod, so it's fairly easy to perform.boodi wrote: Is it easy/feasable ?
Feasible...that's another matter. Unless you're intent on running W8.x/W10 on the system, I'd just stay with the PM765 that's in there, which packs plenty of power by PM standards. You're not going to gain much by overclocking a 533MHz CPU in this platform.

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
but undervolting would keep it cooler ?
and yes i would run w8 on it because my different systems / login / backup are based on it , would install wp7 only as last resort

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
It would. However, there's a limit on how much one can undervolt a CPU before it starts crashing.boodi wrote:but undervolting would keep it cooler ?
Well, there's a guide *somewhere* in the T4x forum on installing W8.x on a T42 (and prior 400MHz T4x units) which involves some finagling, but is supposed to work, I've never tried it myself. Installing a 533MHz CPU with a pinmod would give you an option of a straight forward install.and yes i would run w8 on it because my different systems / login / backup are based on it , would install wp7 only as last resort

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
ok ; I will likely have the t42p ready to be worked in 2 weeks . I will keep you posted about what i decide to do , I've never done an undervoltage/bus mod , but i would like to do it as i know the machine would run cooler , as my t43p is showing sign of age due to frequent high temperatures working conditions ( 90 for cpu and 73 for gpu )
edit : found this guide for the 533 bus mod http://www.notebookreview.com/news/pin- ... m-m-guide/
I hope it will work also on the pentium M 765
for undervolting from what i understand is an all-software mod instead

These are very high temps for a T43p. Take it from someone who has seen hundreds - at least - of them.boodi wrote: as my t43p is showing sign of age due to frequent high temperatures working conditions ( 90 for cpu and 73 for gpu )
Which OS are you running on that poor T43p?

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
windows 8 .
I'm opening the t43p as soon as I have spare time in a week end , and remove dust and possibly if easy and fast , replacing the thermal compound too
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=121274
in fact the graphic card is showing signs of malfunction pretty frequently
also the southbridge chipset mainboard soldering seems not stable lately
due to the screen size and screen quality ( and personal affection ) this is still my main portable assistant , I just can't work better and find myself at ease on newer wide format screen lcd laptop , so i have to buy another with the same screen format and size ( not to mention the wonderful keyboard ) , to have it loaded and ready to do the job
OFF TOPIC I have also bought a pretty clean t61 14'' which run fast and cool for all my use , but the 14' screen size doesn't do it for some application that i need to use extensively
I will likely buy or have someone build to me a frankenpad later this year or next year , at moment the only solution i can speculate is to have a II machine ready in the case the first one give me problems which I'm not ready to assess while on the go --
or eventually die and leave me with the t61 i have bought , which i could use as a substitute but some little time only before getting another 15'' machine

What would you consider to be normal temps for a T43p?ajkula66 wrote:These are very high temps for a T43p. Take it from someone who has seen hundreds - at least - of them.

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
That will depend on a lot of things (CPU/OS) but an undervolted PM 780 should idle at 55-60C at most in W7. Less than that in XP. GPU should be in just about the same range, +/- a degree or two.MrMaguire wrote:What would you consider to be normal temps for a T43p?

Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
I guess the matter is some java apps that i need to run -daily- : during java loadups temperature reaches easily 90 91 92 degress even 93 ; did quite never happen before May 2016 though.ajkula66 wrote:These are very high temps for a T43p. When they are loaded and running , temperature usually stay somewhere between 65 and 85 depending on cpu load
When some java app is running if I start browsing (firefox) temperatures again will get close to the aforementioned limits.
Most likely the thermal compound has largely dried up, saturday I will buy it and hopefully sunday i will take the time to open the chassis , remove the fan , remove the dust if there's any , unveil cpu/gpu and clean the thermal compound remains , then add the new thermal compound , close the chassis and test temperatures on java applications .
I will look for a guide to do it , I suppose there's plenty on both youtube and here on the forum .
The graphic card is compromised though as on startup the temperature is low but on the IBM logo screen there's plenty of blue vertical line prints which weren't there before , ie last year
Re: t42p with 2,10 pentium.. is the fsb/volt mod feasable ?
I finally found a local business that says he have big bunch of thinkpads unused ...spoken at the phone and eventually he have t41,42 and 43 too .
and is willing to test and sell some of them ( still have to discuss the price don't know if i can get them for a bargain or not ) on my interest .
What do you think ..
am I better with a t42 or a t43 , in case i have to choose ( he says it has both the machines , and I will have to go and look and buy all-in-once one possibly in the week end , or monday )
