Do T43s support external 24inch LCDs and 100GB HDs?
Do T43s support external 24inch LCDs and 100GB HDs?
Hello everyone.
I had a T42 for 2 months and after it was taken away from me I had a hard time with my old mac. So now I am looking into these new T43s, more specifically the T43p 2668G7U, which can be found here:
http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2668G7U
I have a few questions about this beast:
1) Can I connect it to Dell's 24 inch LCD at the appropriate resolution (1920x1200)? The monitor specs are available here:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... nk_number=
2) Can I replace the hard drive with the new Hitachi 100GB 7200rpm? Anyone knows if IBM plans on offering it as an option soon?
The HD specs are here:
http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/e ... 0eac4f0a0/
3) Anyone had any hands-on experience with the Fire GL V3200 GC? I am looking into using it with Matlab.
I will not be buying anything before September, so any ideas/predictions on possible upcoming T43 models are welcome.
Thanks all for the help...

IIRC, the max resolution for DVI is 1600x1200 on an IBM. I could be wrong, though.
As for the HDD, I know the answer is yes, as others on this forum have done that.
The GPU, well, AFAICT, it's comparable to a Mobility Radeon X600. That may or may not tell you what you need to know.

Is there a way to install anothet GC at the dock? How can I do that? Any links would be very helpful. I saw that I can put a half-size PCI. Does this exclude some GCs? Or basically any desktop GC would work?RonS wrote:I have a T42p and am running two 2405FPW's digitally in 1920x1200 resolution:
One on the DVI from the Dock, running IBM's stock (current rev) drivers
The other from an ATI 9250 card installed in the dock
Also, assuming I have the same GC in the laptop, does it make a difference to the support of external resolution the size of my laptop screen (14'' or 15'')?
Thank you all for your replies.
It's a PCI slot, so you're going to have... fun trying to find a graphics card.
The newest GPUs that are half height are GeForce FX 5200s (well, there ARE half-height 6200s, but there's no such thing as a PCI 6200) and Radeon 9250s.

There are LOTS of PCI-based video cards out there. Right here in my office I count seven of them, and I know that there are dozens more.
Here is a link to PCI video cards that NewEgg carries: http://tinyurl.com/ahk4h
The one I'm currently running in my Dock II is this one, and it works perfectly: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131284 I chose this one because it doesn't have a fan, so it runs totally quiet. (I also disabled the fan in the Dock II because of noise.)
There are also PCI cards with dual or quad DVI ports from Appian, Matrox, and ColorGraphic.

Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.
RonS: Hold on a sec, I though the Dock II (according to IBM) only accepted half-height PCI cards? Will it indeed fit standard size PCI cards?
Maybe I'm mistaken on what a half-height card really is, but I always assumed it used the smaller bracket. I've purchased a lot of Intel Server NIC's lately, and they all come with a smaller metal bracket for use in U1 & U2 machines & I always though these cards were half-height.
The above posters are correct in the fact that HALF-HEIGHT PCI cards are pretty rare, but if it will take FULL-HEIGHT PCI cards, then the field is quiet open!
I sure would like to put a standard size Creative Labs Audigy II card if it will fit.

I just found a picture of that card and it looks like it will fit just fine, but I can't be sure without testing it.
I'm confused over the terms "low-profile," "half-height" and "half-size". The terms seem to be used interchangably.
The 9250 card I have in my dock has a normal, full-size edge bracket. I put it in the dock without modification. As far as I can tell, the Dock II will take most normal-sized PCI cards just fine.
I have a full-size Matrox QID-PRO card and it just barely won't fit. It it was just a millimeter smaller, it would fit. I've tested about eight other video, SCSI and Firewire cards and they all fit just fine.
