Slow the "go to sleep" process

#1 Post by CeeBee » Sat Jul 16, 2016 4:36 am

T43-1871 w/ 2GB memory running W7

Is there a way of telling the T43 software (or registry) to give the sleep-down process more time to stop services and/or other processes before it's sleeping? Why? It seems the Ultrabay device(s) may need more time to stop.

Closing the lid (or Fn-F4) puts the computer to sleep okay although it takes some seconds before I hear the confirming beep. However, the green light above the Ultrabay (right side) stays ON. As far as I know, that means it's not sleeping (shut off).

When I resume from sleep the computer wakes up fine for several seconds .. before it goes back to sleep a 2nd time. This time the Ultrabay indicator light goes OFF.

Finally, the 2nd resume happens without issues and the Ultrabay light is ON again and everything works! This issue happens regardless of what I have in the Ultrabay slot, CD-DVD or 2nd HD.

The ultrabay light on my T61, T60, and T43 IIRC, has always remained on when I suspend in Linux. Suspend happens instantly and resume does not result in a second suspend.

In your case, this seems more like an internal W7 issue. I don't think there is a way to modify the time it takes to actually sleep, but I could be wrong. If it is really annoying, then you may consider reinstaling W7 or even switching to Linux for better performance and driver support.

As I didn't have this for the first 18 months after I installed W7 .. you are probably right. But there are many Lenovo drivers that can cause trouble and T43 1871 with Intel graphics is bit finicky at times. As I don't want to reinstall W7, I was looking for advise in case someone else had experienced similar issues.

If you are right on the light, then what happens on resume may be that the Ultrabay device is 1st detached and then reattached on second resume. At any rate, with nothing in the Ultrabay I have no issues with resume except that it's not instant like with Linux...

Thanks!

Question: are Ultrabay devices hot-swapable? Presumably I need to use Safe Remove first. And can I swap devices during sleep, no problem?

Observation: booting w/o any Ultrabay device I put the T43 to sleep. Then, while suspended, I added a HD Caddy in the Ultrabay slot and woke the computer .. no problems and no 2nd resume. I then suspended a couple of times and each time it resumed okay w/o a 2nd (pita) resume. Does this make any sense?

It depends on the device. On the T40 and T60 series they're hotswappable. I think the T30 may be as well. Older machines, like the 600E, require you to put the machine to sleep first.

The Ultrabay Serial/Parallel Port Adapter can be hot-removed (after ejecting it) but won't function again until the machine either boots or wakes from sleep with the module installed.
