#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Sun Jun 12, 2005 3:06 pm

What DVD software is everyone using. I know that IBM includes thier own with the T43p but what is the most feature rich.

Thanks

I think PowerDVD is the best. When I'm not using PowerDVD it's WMP10.

I favor WinDVD. It's simple, I like the interface, and it hasn't given me stuttering problems (I've had PowerDVD problems in the past).

I'm using WinDVD4 (included with ThinkPad) on this machine, and WinDVD5 (got it for $6 on Amazon from a 3d party merchant) on my midtower.

windows media player classic here. It's simple and it works.

I tried PowerDVD 5 and Windvd 5 and 6, they all failed to play some of the test dvds I have. When it's working, they are all memory hogs with sluggish UI response. I found most of the features are not useful to me, partly because the thinkpad doesn't have 5.1 surround audio.

Oh, I assume you are not asking about dvd burning software ...

So far I am partial to PowerDVD. I am currently running version 4. The feature I like best about PowerDVD is the popup toolbar that can be used during full screen viewing when you bring the mouse to the top of the screen. This toolbar can show up to ten navigation controls depending on how you have it set up. Note: The mouse pointer can be drug off the screen so that it is not visible during full screen viewing.

I briefly tried the WinDVD that came preinstalled from IBM, but it would not allow output to the TV-out jack. PowerDVD did not have this limitation. I suspect that the version of WinDVD that IBM supplied is a 'lite' version, and that if you were to upgrade to the full version, then TV-out would function.

Not really sure what you mean by feature rich - if it plays my movie then i am happy.

I personally use VLC player for everything - it seems to be able to play any file or disc i want and i hate having different players for everything i want to play.

Gregg;
I have found that Intervideo that comes with the
2668-H8U works just dandy. In fact I have it on all of mt TP's.
Well I finally got mine finished [installation] that is.
Nikon Capture runs well and will be much better when Bill gets me the additional 1 gb ram.

since i like keeping as less programs as possible for each of my computer tasks or needs, i use windows player 10 or i use Nero's dvd player software called nero showtime, its pretty simple and average features...and its included in nero ultra edition.

regards.

ps:nero=greatest all burning software, im my opinion
IBM ThinkPad T43 2668-72u + RAM upgraded to 1GB = not just as best for business but also as best all-purpose professional portable computer ever!

I am using Zoom Player (20$) for watching DVD's, because it ist powerfull and easy to use. If you see it you know what I mean. I never liked the WinDVD or PowerDVD GUI's. When I am watching DVD's with foreign Region Codes or movies with special codecs, I use VLC (videolan.org, freeware). It plays just everything without any problems.
