t40p for RDP connections only

#1 Post by rychuu » Sat Oct 08, 2016 5:53 am

Hello,
I have old t40p IBM computer and I need it to make it 'thin client' for a short time.

I would like to ask you what would give me best performance.

In my t40p I have 4200RPM old hard drive (I suppose with bad sectors.)
I have MSDNAA program where I can get any Windows system from XP to 10.
I have lot of funny Linux distros but I suppose that would be better to have Windows due to RDP protocol specific features.
I have remote Windows 10 Pro computer and VPN over PPTP on network level. I can change it to OpenVPN for example.
That is very temporarily solution for 6-8 weeks maximum, after that I will use normal computer, and my old t40p goes on shelf :)

And I would like to use that as thin client - I am consdiering use usb 2.0 based port to make system drive without HDD. I will use that still on AC adapter, so the power consumption doesnt matter.

Currently I am thinking about usage Sandisk Cruzer Fit 32gb (totally new, and I can use it only for that if it got bad sectors after use) [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-cru ... uId=559770] as local disk for Windows 7/or 10 -byut I am unsure about native performance of this old base computer.

Thank you for any advices

regards
I am using Lenovo t410 2518-4ju.

best regards

Anything T42 or older doesn't have a CPU which supports PAE, so the newest Windows you could run is 7 as 8 and newer require PAE enabled CPUs. Windows 7 will run adequately on a T4x series with close to max. RAM (1 GB minimum, 2GB will make a huge positive impact).

Thank you for that answer :)
I have there 2GB of ram and the fastest possible CPU (not sure now which, but I have swapped it years ago)

So I will try Win 7 x32 (I suppose x64 doesnt work?)
Latest question is the storage for that - my oldest HDD, or maybe USB drive (about 22 MB in read and 6-8MB in write) from Sandisk?
I am using Lenovo t410 2518-4ju.

32-bit only. You'd need a Core 2 Duo for 64-bit.

Windows won't let you install on removable media, so that rules out the USB flash drive.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
