T43 recommendation

#1 Post by felipeudel » Mon Jun 13, 2005 8:24 pm

Hi all, I am about to place an order for my very first IBM thinkpad. I have two configurations to choose from:

1) T43 14" 1.6ghz GMA 900, 60GHZ 7200RPM HDD, 513MB - XGA
2) T43 14" 1.86ghz X300 64MB, 60GHZ 7200RPM HDD, 513MB - SXGA

The difference in price from option 1 to option 2 is $275.

This computer will be a dual boot. XP for school work :x, and Linux for development  . I have never been a game player, and I am sure that I won't be using this machine for high end games.

My basic question is: Is this $275 worth? How much of speed will I get from 1.86 compared to a 1.6 processor? Any experiences of someone running linux on 14" XGA?

p.s. for hardcore development I will have this machine hooked to a 17" display

Thanks in advance.

The X300 has that nice 64MB of dedicated memory, and preforms better...
Plus you get a MUCH nicer screen
The CPU isn't a huge improvement
Its worth it in my view
And its a 60GB HDD, not GHz

Thanks for the reply. Another question, the price quoted is:

$1124 for the 1.6GHZ with the GMA900 - XGA + shipping
$1394 for the 1.86GHZ with the X300 - SXGA + shipping

What do you think about these quotes? Can I get it any cheaper?

What kind of discounts are you getting? Those prices sound pretty [censored] nice to me.
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400

What are the model numbers for the two you are considering? That must be some discount. I just checked the EPP page, and nothing comes close to your quotes. Isn't the EPP discount equal to the educational one? I could find no T43 education model in the latest Tabook with the specs you describe. According to the Tabook, the only 14" screen TP with the 60GB 7200RPM hard drive appears to be a T43p. And the prices on the EPP page for such models (which have the FireGL card) starts in the $2400 range.

Hi thanks for the reply, I am actually buiding the system starting with the model number: 2686E7U. From this base system I changed the HD to the 60GB 7200.

Thanks, how can I get the EPP discount for this or another system if this one is not possible?

Thanks a bunch

Here is a similar system to what I am looking for: 2687D7U. The only difference is that I would like the 60GB HD instead of the 40GB. I saw this number with its spec from another web site from someone with the EPP. I tried to go to the IBM EPP website but I need a friend there to be able to make the purchase. I wish I had a friend there! Any suggestion on how I could get the EPP discount?

I could be wrong, but the education discount is the best you can do. I believe all EPP models are as-is. You cannot build your own.

The employee friends program have a good price for the following systems.

ThinkPad T43 (IBM Think Express Program)
2687D7U
ThinkPad T43 (IBM Think Express Program)
2687D3U

I wish I could get them!

Thanks again.
