T40 Reboot button with Fan Error

#1 Post by Metallo » Thu Jan 12, 2017 9:03 pm

Hi all,

Given that I am about to format, I decided to bring up this strange issue I have been experiencing with any OS, previously with Linux, currently with WXP and I am sure I will with W7.

This is going on since a couple of years, essentially, when I click the reboot button, the system shuts down and when it attempts to restart I get a fan error.
Now, this has nothing to do with the fan, the fan is new and works great, my PC stays on 18 hours/day no issues.
When I use the shut down button and then re-start, it's all good.

So, I know that it is not OS related and it is not fan related, however something triggers the fan error when I hit the reboot button.

I do not remember if the beginning of this issue started when I did something with this machine, perhaps a BIOS update? I am not sure.
Currently I am on 3.23 (1RETDRWW) dated 2007-06-18.

Any hint?

Given that it seems like BIOS 3.23 is the latest, what is the Embedded Controller version?

Hi,

I wonder if the issue below might be linked to the fan reboot error, I will discover it soon once I have found the right SSD/Adapter match for my baby:

For sure it makes my T40 very slow in performing any windows updates or even formatting the HDD, it took something like 10h

Thank you!

Alex, I am not very clear about the reboot process you mention. When you reboot the T40 are you doing Ctrl-Alt-Del? Or are you hitting and holding the power button until the machine shuts off?

I have experienced fan errors before on a T23 but that was clearly due to a problem with the fan. And I could hit ESC to continue with the startup.

Hi Sudevan,

By reboot I mean when you restart the system without shutting down.
For instance, you do some updates and then the system is asking you to reboot to finish the updates, or you simply click reboot from the Windows Start button.

Unfortunately, now that I have a SSD the issue persists, so I can exclude that the old and faulty HDD was the issue.

Hope this clarifies.

Thank you

I know you say that you have a new fan but everything points to a fan problem. It either isn't getting up to speed quickly enough or it isn't being detected as getting up to speed.
I would try gently lubricating the fan bearing as it might be a bit dry. As you say the system normally remains on 18 hours per day.

The fan is a few months old, I do have another one sealed, I can simply unplug the existing fan and try the new one and see what happens, it is a quick test.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
