T41 Unknown PCI Device every time I start Windows 2000
T41 Unknown PCI Device every time I start Windows 2000
New laptop to me (work)
Windows 2000 (W2K)
23737FU
I have the following problems:
1) Every time I boot, I get an unknown PCI device
2) Wireless works OK, but wired LAN built in does not
Not sure if these are related.
Machine works OK otherwise.
Thanks,
Esteban

Download this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54046
That should take care of your problems.

Mine says Intel 8254 OEM... which driver do I download?
Thanks,
Esteban

Call IBM?
That IS your ethernet controller, as far as I can tell. That probably means that something else is missing it's driver.
I'm thinking that your ethernet controller, jack, or something in between is fried...

Go to Device Manager: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. Then look for a yellow ?. If you see one under pci device, double click on it then choose to remove device.
Next go to website:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... date=false
and enter the information in the drop down boxes. When you finish you should see the device driver you need for your ethernet controller. Download the device driver and the corresponding text file. Double click on the device driver file and notice where it extracts itself. Follow the instructions in the text file for installing the device driver.
Note: If you reboot your laptop after removing the unknown device in device manager, Windows will usually reinstall the unknown device. You need to install the device driver before rebooting. If you still have an unknown device showing up, try upgrading the driver, pointing to the location where the device driver extracted itself as indicated above.

Issue solved! I now have my GB Ethernet card listed and no longer an unknown PCI device.
However, I'm told the ethernet adapter is bust on this PC b/c there is no MAC address for it (IPCONFIG shows the letter F for the MAC address). I'm told this means sending to IBM for fixing.
Anything I can troubleshoot before contacting IBM and having to send the PC in?
Thanks,
Esteban

Go there, and it should tell you how to change the MAC address. I don't know what you want to change it to, though - preferably not the same as something else on the network, or it'll cause major conflicts.

Solved at last! Thanks in part to the input from this forum. Thank you!
It was three separate issues:
1) I needed correct drivers for the gigabit ethernet built into the motherboard.
2) Somehow the ethernet had no MAC address. Assigned a MAC to it using the address noted in a sticker on the bottom of the machine.
3) The unknown PCI device was due to missing correct INF file for the 855PM Intel chipset. This one took a while.
Thanks again.
