T43 Quote -- help me?

#1 Post by drewnyc » Thu Jun 16, 2005 3:28 pm

I just got a "special" quote from IBM -- and need some help deciding.

266872U T43 FINGERPRINT PENT M 760 2.0

PLUS:
1) An extra 512MB memory
2) Four year depot warranty

Grand Total = $2283 --- shipped

I'm worried about:

1) extra heat
2) extra fan noise
3) crap battery life

I currently have a T42 2378EUU (with a 6 volt battery) which I love, but have to give up, and would like some extra screen resolution and hard-disk space.

I'm not a gamer, but program and do design stuff...

can someone please help me out...

cheers

1) My t43p make no more heat than my T42p. Both had the UXGA 15" screen.

2) fan noise: I only hear my fan on boot-up. Other than that it is so quiet that it does not bother me.

3) get the 9cell extra capacity battery and you will not need to worry about battery under normal conditions. I got 5+ hours on my t42p and would not expect less out of the t43.

Does your grand total include sales tax? If it doesn't, you can do better through one of the credit card sites. They throw in an extra 6 cell battery for free or an extra 9 cell battery for $49.

Get a quote on the 2687DSU, which is exactly the same as the 72U, but comes with a 9 cell battery and is probably about $100 cheaper. Also, if the extra memory is not part of the bundle, I would drop that and buy it from elsewhere and save another $40-$50.

I have the 266876u which is almost the same as the 72u. I don't have a T42 to compare with, but it runs cooler than my old T23. The fan is extra noisy at bootup. Other times, it is not too bad. I'm using the Centrino Hardware Control and with the CPU at the low setting, wifi on and display at level 3, I'm getting over 3 hours on a single charge on a 6 cell battery.

regards.

ps:with the x300 overclocked (not much) my babe runs doom 3 and unreal 2004 very nicely.

IBM ThinkPad T43 2668-72u + RAM upgraded to 1GB = not just as best for business but also as best all-purpose professional portable computer ever!
