IBM Thinkpad T42 windows 98 temp measuring and heatsink upgrade

#1 Post by wasilii » Mon Apr 10, 2017 10:36 am

Hi!

I'm new here, bought my Thinkpad T42 for windows 98 games recently. I was cleaning it and replacing thermal paste, when i noticed that the GPU have no heat sink for Radeon 7500. My question is - is it worth to get long heatsink for small price, or it won't make any diffrence for this gpu life/performance?

And can someone recommend any temperature monitoring app for T42 on windows 98? I have tried bunch of these and no one seems to work

Mobility Radeon 7500 has a TDP of 27 watts. If the long heatsink will reduce its temps I think it's safer to use it.

I'm curious, does it have any sort of cooler at all, like the R50p, or is it passive like A31?

It looks like this:

Cooler with short heatsink with ATI chip uncovered.

The T42 runs reasonably cool with that stock heatsink. I wouldn't bother with the long heatsink.

I ran TPFanControl by troubadix on my T42 with XP but if you have applied new thermal paste and cleaned the fan you probably don't need it on Windows 98.
There is also IBM_ECW but I haven't used it Google will help research these options.
