T43 -Worth Getting DVD Burner?

#1 Post by arun » Fri Jun 17, 2005 5:43 pm

Guys,

I am almost ready to buy a T43. I have narrowed it down to 3 laptops. I have a EPP so the prices are pretty good. The prices range from 1311 to 1499.

2687 - D4U Combo
2687 - DTU Blue,Finger,Combo
2687 - DUU Blue,Finger,DVD

Could you guys tell me the worth of having

1. bluetooth(can it be installed aftermarket if needed)
2. finger(does it really work well, relability of it)
3. dvd burner (can I fit a whole movie on a dvd, what is dual layer, are aftermarket ones better)

Thanks every one.

1) BT can be installed but you must be comfortable taking off the keyboard; the BT daughter card is located in the upper left-hand side of the keyboard.

2) the fingerprint reader works fairly well

3) the standard IBM DVD burner is a panasonic UJ-822s (at least that's what I got with the TP that I'm using right now); it's a 2.4x burner that I believe burns both +/-. I've tested a DVD+R and it works. I'm assuming DVD-R disks should work as well.

There are no aftermarket burners for the ultra-slim bay in the T4x series. The T4x uses a 9.5mm thick drive. Current aftermarket laptop drives are 12.7mm thick and can burn upto 8X on single layers and can burn dual-layers at 2.4X-4X speed.

The standard IBM burner is a very slow burner. As mentioned, it is a 2.4X burner for +R and 2X for -R. That means it takes around 30 minutes to burn 4GB of data. It also does not burn dual-layer. A standard DVD+/-R has a single data layer. Dual layer dvds have two data layers and can store up to 8.5GB of data, but dual layer dvds are still very expensive. Many commercial movies are pressed as dual-layer discs.

You can get much faster (8X-16X) external dvd burners with dual layer writing capabilites for about $100-$150. So depending on how often you will burn dvds on the go and how much the price difference is, you can decide if you want this capability built-in.

Get the Multiburner. Apparently mine is listed as an DVD-RAM... (So I can use DVD-RAM format... Useful!)
But its a DDU model
Commerical movies as dual layer? Kidding me there.

I use thinkpad as desktop replacement. The dvd writer drive is fairly slow at 2x but it has been extremely useful to me. CD-R is too small these days for video clips and large amount of data.
