Is it easy to repair a Thinkpad?

#1 Post by kidpaprika » Tue Jun 22, 2004 3:23 am

Hi all

This is a follow-up to my post on repairing a T23.....

I've now managed to find the parts and prices on the IBM website. I need to replace the base plastic from my T23, and also the plastic that houses the LCD.

This will mean that I'll have to transplant most of the innards from my T23 into a new base unit and LCD housing.

I was wondering, how easy will it be to do that? I have a moderate knowledge of computers, and have taken apart/put back together many desktop PCs in the past. The only time I attempted something similar with a laptop was an old Advent model I had, and I actually ended up damaging it in the process.

If I take care, should it be relatively straightforward to remove the motherboard, LCD etc from my current T23 case into a new one, or is this something that should only ever be attempted by a qualified computer technician?

Any further advice would be gratefully received, especially regarding methods of avoiding static discharge to electronic components from my hands.

For the static, I think it's best to ALL repairs to personal computers with both feet in buckets of water...

For the rest, I think you should download the T23 Hardware Maintenance Manual

try this link http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

All sorts of useful stuff in that - beware, it's aimed at FRU (Field Replaceable Units) rather than a complete breakdown, but it's VERY useful

Thanks.

Are you serious about the buckets of water though?

It's a funny image :)

Well, you could put one on your head...no, it's best to avoid humidity. As for 'earthing' yourself to protect internals from static electricity this is V I T A L - touch some grounded metal item before touching the insides - and take your watch off..

Rather than opening a new thread it would have been better if you had continued the old one

to avoid that people post again e.g the URL for the manual. Also a small feedback that you read the replies like "thanks" is not wrong.

If you follow the HMM step by step to the letter and use a little common sense then it should be fairly simple...

It is never simple to disassemble a notebook - but the IBM documentation makes it feasible. Read it carefully *twice* before you start. You need to do every step in order.

I've replaced parts of my T23 case. The instructions are very complete and precise.
