I found that Youtube (Firefox 64 bit) playback improved on my T500 when I disabled browser hardware acceleration. I think by default it tries to use the GPU but neither GMA 4500 nor Radeon 3650 can decode modern codecs. The CPU on the other hand is powerful enough.

My T43 with Lubuntu17.10 plays YT video 480p quite ok in Firefox, as long as I dont fullscreen it.
I just couldn't resist

And the one about that trackpoint names!
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

im on ATI 9600 64mb ram with chromium installed on linux. it has full hardware acceleration and easily does 720p full screen on youtube in the browser. it even runs 1080p in the browser on YT but isnt as smooth.

check your hardware acceleration using "chrome://gpu" in the address bar.

This is what it looks like

Graphics Feature Status
Canvas: Hardware accelerated
CheckerImaging: Disabled
Flash: Hardware accelerated
Flash Stage3D: Hardware accelerated
Flash Stage3D Baseline profile: Hardware accelerated
Compositing: Hardware accelerated
Multiple Raster Threads: Force enabled
Native GpuMemoryBuffers: Software only. Hardware acceleration disabled
Rasterization: Software only. Hardware acceleration disabled
Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
Video Encode: Hardware accelerated
WebGL: Hardware accelerated
WebGL2: Hardware accelerated
