Help please with a Win98 driver for wireless LAN on a T42
Help please with a Win98 driver for wireless LAN on a T42
I have an old T42 with XP on (that is fully working) that I’ve converted to a dual-boot system with Win98SE (SP3) on a separate disk. I’m having a lot of fun trying to get the wireless driver working. I have the "11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PC adapter II" (Atheros chipset).
Win XP Device Manager reports a Device ID for this of PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_1014&SUBSYS_057E1014&REV_01\4&39A85202&0&10F0 – and it is working fine under XP. So I know that is the actual ID of my wireless device, and that the hardware is OK.
Believe the correct driver to use under Win98 is IBM’s nqwc70ww.exe, which expands to a folder structure starting WLLANPHL and subdirectories for WIN2K, WIN98 and WINNT.
If I try and install the driver using the Setup.exe in that folder, it runs Install Shield and I get the Add New Hardware Wizard, which says that Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device. It also won’t install correctly if on a boot I get the same Add New Hardware Wizard and I point it at the Win98 folder, saying that it couldn’t find a driver that matched the device.
The NET5211.INF file in the Win98 folder contains Device IDs that match the Vendor code and Device code (but not the subsystem ID). If I replace one of these IDs in the INF file with the one above that exactly matches my device, then it loads drivers and says in Device Manager that everything is OK. But the wireless tray icon/applet says “The Driver is not installed or the Card is disabled”. I did this just to prove a point - that Windows was rejecting the device as it determined the drivers were't a suitable match for it.
Don’t know enough about how Win98 works. If the Vendor ID and Device ID match, what other information does Windows use to determine if the INF file is right for the device?
Can anyone shed some light on things please? Has anyone managed to get the same device running under Win98?
Many thanks,
David.

Re: Help please with a Win98 driver for wireless LAN on a T42
After some more research I have answered my own question:
The wireless card in my T42 has a PCI ID of VEN_168C&DEV_1014&SUBSYS_057E1014, and is in fact a Foxconn T60H814.01 (also known as AR5BMB-44). It’s a “11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PC adapter II”.
However I also came across a Philips PH12127-E part with a PCI ID of VEN_168C&DEV_1014&SUBSYS_833117AB (also known as a PUBWCM1010 or IBM 39T0071). It’s a “11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PC adapter” – without the “II” at the end. Same Device ID, just different Subsys ID.
The Win98 IBM driver (nqwc70ww.exe) listed on thinkpads.com for the “Wireless LAN software - Dual-Band and ThinkPad 802.11abg for Windows 98 SE, NT 4.0 - ThinkPad R40, T40, T40p, T41, T42, X31, X40” is only for this Philips part.
I now know that the FoxConn and Philips devices, while both having the same Device ID, use slightly different sets of Atheros chips.
If anyone does have a Win98 driver for the Foxconn T60H814.01/AR5BMB-44 I’d be interested. But I've bought a Philips version of the mini PCI card to fix my immediate issue.

Find out and give us the name of that driver, it would save everybody a lot of headache.

I’ve now acquired a Philips PH12127-E "11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PC adapter" from eBay,which has a PCI ID of VEN_168C&DEV_1014&SUBSYS_833117AB. I can confirm that the Win 98 wireless driver nqwc70ww.exe (from https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad- ... m/T42.html “Wireless LAN software - Dual-Band and ThinkPad 802.11abg for Windows 98 SE” (second from bottom of table) works with it. The control panel software for Win 98 is a little clunky, but I've got a wireless internet connection.
I have a theory. Back in 2004 when the T42 was launched, IBM was still providing support for Win 98. The Philips wireless card above was an option, so a Win 98 driver was made available.
The Foxconn T60H814.01 (AR5BMB-44) card came out in 2005, after IBM sold its laptop business to Lenovo. I suspect Lenovo didn’t have the same generous approach to supporting Win 98, so just provided an XP driver. Which explains why there don't seem to be any Win 98 drivers for it anywhere.

You can find the entire IBM driver dump for laptops here and here, someone created the site back in 2008 to mirror IBM's FTP.David00 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 6:09 amI’ve now acquired a Philips PH12127-E "11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PC adapter" from eBay,which has a PCI ID of VEN_168C&DEV_1014&SUBSYS_833117AB. By the way, I couldn't find "nqwc70ww.exe"; I believe it is "1qwc70ww.exe" and text file.
