How can I update my IBM Thinkpad Fast Infrared Port for my T

#1 Post by chermesh » Mon Jun 20, 2005 6:38 am

I can't see a clue on an infrared driver in my control panel and wonder where should I look for it.
I would rather update (or reinstall) this device and to find any reference to an ir device on the IBM site.
Is there a link on the IBM site which I failed to find? Or else, should the driver be uploaded from another source?
I'll appreciate any suggestion.

Go to: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. There you should find Infrared Devices. Open that and from there you can update the driver.

However, I would recommend that you download Software Installer from IBM and install it (Software Installer itself will be found at Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Software Installer - after installation).

When you run Software Installer while online, it will list any driver and IBM software updates available for your ThinkPad, and give you the choice of which ones you want to install. Below is the link to get you started:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... date=false

Alternatively, you can run Windows Update and see if any Infrared driver updates are listed for your ThinkPad.

Tried them all, but...

Hi GomJabbar,
Thanks for your suggestions. I tried them all, but am still without an irda service.
The IBM updater doesn't show any ir update. When I reach the installation phase, it doesn't show an irda option.
I keep updating my winxp routinely, and never met an irda option.
The ir doesn't show on my control panel. When I check my services list, I find it inactive. When I try to activate it, the act fails, since one of its dependencies, the IrDA Protocol, is unavailable.

Make sure that IrDA is enabled in the BIOS. Press F12 during startup and run Setup to get there.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Yep, check there first. Next you could boot-up in PC Doctor (available on your ThinkPad driver matrix page from IBM) and do a system diagnostic scan. Perhaps you have a hardware problem with IrDA.

Looks like a first step - BIOS

Thanks,
I checked my BIOS, and, you're right, IR wasn't activated in my BIOS. So, I did it.
Still, I'm not sure it works ok. I'm trying to send a file from my thinkpad to a mobile phone. I activate the IR on the mobile-phone, put the two ports one in front of the other, try to send the file, but don't know how. There's no option of sending.
What do I miss?

Does the PC Doctor do a IR test?

#7 Post by chermesh » Tue Jun 21, 2005 7:45 am

Hi GomJabbar,
Thanks.
I ran PC Doctor, implemented the system test, but found no reference to the IR service.
Do you know how to run an IR test on PC Doctor?
