Video Driver Issues On Thinkpad T23
Hello -
I am troubleshooting a Thinkpad T23 for the son of a friend. My friend
bought the laptop second hand and it is running Windows XP.
The issue is when my friend's son runs Adobe Premiere Pro v.6.x, it will
periodically crash hard. He gets the blue screen of death with a memory
dump blaming s3ssav.dll. When the program doesn't crash, it works
except that it will only play the audio of homemade .AVI files. I first
suspected that the missing codecs were the cause, except that the
same .AVI files do play completely in Windows Media Player.
A Google search revealed that this dll is part of the S3
SuperSavage/IXC16 video driver. I tried downloading the latest driver
from the IBM Support site and installing it, but no dice. It still crashes or
only plays back audio.
I know the version of Adobe Premiere is good, since I also installed it on
another computer and it ran without any problems. I have tried
reinstalling Premiere on the Thinkpad without success.
Given the above, I have to think the s3 video driver is suspect. Has
anybody successfully dealt with this in the past? If not, does anybody
know of a newer driver on the s3 web site than the one IBM has posted? I
checked but couldn't find one that seemed that matched exactly...
Thanks in advance, Will

Don't know if this has anything to do with the crashes, but how close to the Premiere system requirements is the T23? I'd think that as an NLE (and as typically Adobe bloatware, pardon me), it would require quite a bit of horsepower. (I shudder to think what the render times are like on a T23.... )

Thank you both.... I will try those drivers and see what happens. As for the requirements, it is tight but per the Adobe site the T23 should be able to handle it. I agree that it is a hog, but I my friend installed from the same disk on an older desktop and it works, albeit very slowly.
Anyway, i will try the drivers from s3graphics and I'll let you know what happens. Thanks, Will

Re:
I've got the same problem swapping my old pieces and parts into a T23 with MOBO and LCd running XP with BSD and the bad S3SSAV file and this link takes me to a page with chinese characters. One link there took me to M$'s page that said there was an error on the page.
Can someone please help me with a link to the proper graphics file?
Thanks!
Heather

This is the factory's suggested driver for the S3 video controller:
