T21 - won't come back from Suspend

#1 Post by zoesdad » Mon Jun 20, 2005 2:34 pm

Hi, my father has a T21 running Windows XP. He normally runs it on AC power. After he puts the system into Standby mode and leaves it for a while when he tries to go into resume (hold the Fn key for a second or open the display) it won't resume properly. Instead, he sees a very feint outline of the screen (the login window of XP) but it is unresponsive to any keypress or mouse movement.

The hard drive blinks every so often like you'd expect when the computer is running normally but idle. The power LED is on and the suspend LED (moon) is off.

We've updated the BIOS and all the drivers using the new Software Installer. Problem still occurs.

Any suggestions?
David.

Try plugging a monitor into the vga port and see if it is the LCD backlight causing your problems.

OK thanks. I'll suggest that to him. Are you saying that the absence of an external display is the reason why there's only a faint display of the Windows login screen, and that a normal bright version will appear on the external display?

No, he's saying that the REASON might be a possible problem with the LCD backlight. Plugging in an external display is merely a test to REVEAL whether or not the LCD backlight itself might be faulty. Obviously the "absense of an external display" is not the cause of a faulty backlight.

OK thanks. Well he plugged the T21 into an external display and yes, an image does appear on the external monitor. I've asked him to go to the Configuration Utility to turn off the monitor (ie "LCD Only") and see if that makes a difference.

Do you think it is a hardware fault or a software/driver fault?

It sounds like either the Light bulb in the LCD display, the dispplay ribbon cable or the voltage inverter for the bulb.
I'd try the inverter first as they are the easiest to change.
Then try the ribbon cable next because it is fairly cheap and if that does not do it then you need an LCD panel.
Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual to show you how to change the parts.
