T41 Won't Start

#1 Post by Callahan » Wed Jan 17, 2018 7:52 pm

Started my T41 several times today with no trouble ... late afternoon it wouldn't start.

I get two error messages: Error / 0271 Check Date and Time Settings ... and the other is as follows:

Error / Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller on Motherboard / BUS:02, Device:01, Function:00

I am guessing I may need a new CMOS battery and the date and other settings are gone in the BIOS. I had to change a setting in the BIOS with that PCI Network Controller and it probably has reverted back.

I replaced the CMOS battery just over three years ago with a cheap generic battery from a seller on Amazon. This time I would like to get a better CMOS battery replacement.

I would like to have some input on a good battery to buy and from who. I am looking at batteries at Amazon and eBay and they seem to be a cheap generic type. I can order one of those again but would there be a better battery for a little extra money to buy?

Thanks ...

Maybe been old battery, just get another from ebay instead, even US sellers have them.

or if you live in places that don't sell these welded batteries locally like Canada, you can unweld the original one, buy a 2032 or 2016 battery and use foil + tape to tape it in. Works just fine as long as you don't intentionally pull on the wire.

Or you can try making a battery pack like in this video, using a heatshrink tube slightly bigger than a CR2016/2032, two wires, heat gun, and hot-melt glue.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

I went ahead and just ordered another battery from an eBay seller. He has sold many and it says 'brand new' and a good price with free shipping ... should be a good supply turnover.

thinkpadcollection - you may be right, I might have been sent an older battery. I have three ThinkPads and replaced all the batteries in about a four month time frame. The other ThinkPads are working fine.

kfzhu1229 - I live in a small area, it would be nice to be able to buy one locally but I don't think that's possible. I haven't really checked though, might end up with an old battery anyway.

axur-delmeria - thanks for the video link, I don't have any of the materials but that looks like something I would enjoy trying, but probably just buying a new battery every 5 or 6 years is the way to go for me. I still saved the video to have handy.

Thanks for the help and ideas ...

the cr2032 cell battery on itself is very easy to find. Most likely a gas station will have that.
However the welded version is much harder to find (the one with the battery connector). I had no luck finding such a thing locally and bought on eBay that's shipped from China. Took a month to arrive

kfzhu1229 ... yes, the local Walmart has that battery but not one with the wires attached. I think this one is being shipped from the USA. It says 'brand new'.

I might look into buying some heat shrink plastic for the future and maybe do my own fix. That would be handy, just go to Walmart ... buy a battery and everything up and running. However, since I have two spare computers, I suppose I could just wait for one to arrive in the mail.

thanks ...

kfzhu1229 and anyone else needing a CMOS battery in the future. As I look back on the eBay battery ad where I purchased my battery. It doesn't say what type of battery it is, just that it's new.

The ad right below says that it's a CR2032 type battery:

New Backup CMOS Battery CR2032 Bios Adapter for IBM Thinkpad T40 T41 T42 T43

It didn't cost that much more and it had a small shipping charge but that's probably the battery I should have bought. It might have a longer life in the end. Not sure what type of battery I will be getting from the other seller ... it will fit and work, maybe a weaker battery.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R ... y&_sacat=0

I will know next time to read the ads a little carefully ... live and learn.

Well one of the problems buying those things from eBay is that you have no idea what brand the battery is and you have no idea how long it lasts. I usually buy from dollar store so it's the same story. But if you are the type of person who picks which brand of battery you'd like, go to a legit store and buy CR2032/CR2016 battery and tape it in by yourself. That way the battery can actually last another decade (and have a much lower explosion risk)

OK ... the CMOS battery arrived yesterday and all is well and working again. However, I discovered a new problem after putting the computer back together. The computer battery is now dead and not charging. The little battery light stays an amber color with 0% always showing.

This was a generic cheap battery I bought from an eBay seller maybe 2 + years ago. Yesterday evening I had decided to buy a 'real' Lenovo battery this time but early this morning I was thinking that I may not buy a new battery at this time. I really don't use battery power very often and I have two other ThinkPads ( 2 T42s) that I plan to just take the battery out of one of them for now.

Also early today I came across this website with interesting battery information:

BatteryCare

http://batterycare.net/en/index.html

So if I do buy another battery ... expensive or cheap ... it will mostly be sitting in the computer unused for the most part, aging and wearing down. I will use the other two batteries that I already have until they go bad.

When that finally happens, I am thinking I will buy just one 'good' battery to use in any one of my three T4x laptops, when I really may need a battery on a trip or for a few hours somewhere.

So I have a few questions ... if I leave the dead battery in the T41 for now to fill in the 'space' to help keep dust and debris out of that part of the computer, can this be harmful in the long run? The amber light will always be on and I guess the T41 circuitry will always be trying to charge a dead battery.

Do they make a 'fake' type battery module to have just as a filler for that space? Can I fix the 'dead battery' somehow to not make contact and then there will be no attempted charging? The dead battery will just serve as a space filler.

I'm open to any ideas and suggestions. I just don't need three 'new' batteries in my three ThinkPads anymore. They don't last anyway so it seems like I have wasted a lot of money since getting my ThinkPads in 2010. Some batteries last awhile and others don't ... have always bought the cheap ones from eBay sellers. I have replaced many batteries it seems.

I am also wondering if I leave the 'dead battery' in the computer as a space filler then it may start to corrode causing more problems and I may not catch that happening right away.

thanks,

Callahan

Yes. You're risking the possibility of blowing the charging circuit, so don't do it. Not to mention that the CPU likely won't run at full speed with a dead battery installed.

Even a battery that holds a minimal charge will do for the purposes of running the laptop on regular basis.

OK ... the dead battery is out of the computer. Should have probably taken it out yesterday but I wanted to be sure it wasn't going to start charging again.

thanks ... I am going to see if I can gently pry the battery open somehow ... not destroying it, just trying to get the cells out and then I could maybe use the case as a space filler. I hate having that large area open to dust, dirt or whatever. Must be some other member who came up with a solution for this problem.

I once had a NEC laptop that came with a battery module space filler ... it was a 'dummy' look-a-like battery case. That was nice when the battery finally died and I just used it. A replacement battery for that model was really expensive.

Well I had partial success in trying to turn the battery into a dummy battery case space filler. I was able to carefully cut open part of the plastic case to remove the cells. However, trying to remove at least one battery cell to be able to get all the cells out, not happening. They are insulated but held together fairly strong. I tried using and old thin kitchen dinner knife to pry one middle battery out ... there are six total battery cells, but I got sparks and smoke. Tried to pry at least one battery out ... but more sparks and more smoke.

Decided to call an end to that experiment, didn't want something possibly blowing up in my face ... I had no protective eyeware on also, not a good thing. I guess not all those battery cells were dead. I think I did read yesterday that only one dead cell does kill the whole battery, even though the other five may still be OK or still holding a decent charge.

I just ordered a new cheap battery from an eBay seller for $12.26 with free shipping. I will rotate an older battery from another ThinkPad into the T41. I just need to have something in that open battery space.

There may still be an 'dummy battery space' filler out there somewhere for sale, I just didn't find anything in any Google searches so far.

Oh well, live and learn to experiment another day.

You are more lucky than me last time trying to poke a T22 battery. Mine not only did it have smoke and spark, it is only when the shorting got so strong that my copper wire turned red (GLOWING RED) that I noticed. Luckily I had a screwdriver on my hand and used that to pry off the copper wire and saved my house.
I guess the lesson is try not to get freaked out by smoke and sparks, but to act fast and correctly

Well just a quick mention about the new battery I just got for my T41 from the eBay seller. I was not paying good attention to check everything out when I ordered the battery. I've had it since Feb 1st but did not open the silver gray static pouch until yesterday. I did open the box right away to make sure a battery was there ... it seem to feel just a little extra heavy but not much.

So yesterday I decided to get the battery out and stick it into the back of the computer. Right away I though the seller sent me the wrong battery ... much larger that the old one.

So I finally realized I had a larger 9 cell battery and not the regular 6 cell battery that I have always ordered. The price was reasonable and the seller was almost 100% + feedback and it was for my ThinkPad computer ... just didn't realize what was in the battery box.

I had never saw one of those batteries till yesterday ... so it sticks out a little in the back. I had just wanted to fill the empty space to keep out dust and dirt. I don't do much battery power work but the extra power may come in handy someday. Another interesting experience with the battery odyssey ... live and learn.

6600mAh is always the 9-cell type, if you do the math. Each cell is typically 1500-2800mAh and 3.7V, you have 3 packs connected in series to produce rated 3.7 * 3 = 10.8V, and in this case you also have 3 packs connected in parallel to triple the battery capacity. So yes, this is 3*3 configuration, or 9 cells.

kfzhu1229 ... thanks for the additional information. After searching ThinkPad batteries on Google and reading what I found, I have all this in my head for the future.

I guess maybe battery prices have dropped since I last bought a battery two or three years ago. At least maybe on 9 cell batteries, didn't think one could be bought for around $12 ... I paid around $14 (I think) for a 6 cell battery 2 1/2 years ago.
