T42 Memory

#1 Post by gfuller » Fri Mar 30, 2018 12:32 am

Since my main T420 machine is down for the time being, I've been using my T42. Works great - only problem is that it has 512MB and runs Windows 7. I'm thinking it needs a memory upgrade. 8)

I'd like to upgrade it to the maximum 2GB. Does anyone have any recommendations DDR laptop memory that can be found on Newegg for a decent price?

Newegg is WAY too expensive for that.

Also, check if any forum members have spare ones that they don't need, as well as check your local classifieds and see if there are any good deals there (maybe not, but never hurts for trying)
If you buy from eBay (especially with the hong kong sellers), you gotta be very careful. I once bought 2GB of RAM from eBay for $10 and... While it is legit 2x1GB DDR, it is made by one of those tiny Chinese manufacturers with no guarntee for compactibility - it won't POST on my T42 with both RAM installed, so I had to split one onto the T42 and one onto a Dell Inspiron 600m.
(Also, it is actually very hilirous that the brand is Trump, while I bought it at least 2 years before Trump's election  )

Every 2x1GB DDR modules were OEM brands with OEM official stickers like Micron, Samsung, Hynix with part number for them not generics worked every time and I specified DDR400 speed. Worked in R40, A31p and T42. Average price is about 11 CDN to 15 CDN per pair plus shipping from chinese/Hong Kong sellers.

This one of these pairs worked great in aforementioned thinkpads.

Did same for pair of Samsung brand OEM memory 2x512MB modules working perfectly first try in T23.

And why did this "Trump" brand come in?

Cheers, thinpadcollection

No wonder. Laser-etched words and numbers "Trump" memory chips on that generic name "Memory-Ho" modules. Very funny and that is your trouble not working out of box. :)

I never go for those oddballs and generics.

You made it seem like as if it is a sin for me to do such a thing. But yeah, maybe ThinkPads deserve better than Trump branded stuff.
Also, I did not intend to buy such a generic brand, the product image has an Infineon brand on the RAM sticks.
Anyways, both of the RAM sticks are sold in an A31p and an Inspiron 600m.

No. Does the sticker label on the "Trump/Memory-Ho" says "Infineon"? Also, recently now very extremely wary about chinese/hong kong sellers and will insist on auction details, by advising them do not ship if these memory are not same one. That is the point about saying that and still, this is major issue is how well done SPD programming job, also not only for timings, and there is host of data for different set up to utilize memory interface operation. I have seen many problems with G.Skill in any computers and Corsair as well, was in family computer, detected as 1333 where it should be 1600 and memory module is rated for 1600, had to manually adjust this in bios to 1600, yet not trust that yet so eventually removed Corsair with Crucial 16 GB total then reset bios again, auto-detected SPD as 1600 properly. This was on Asus motherboard (my go to brand for motherboards). Keep in mind not overclocked at all and Crucial is Micron Technology's made them, sold as retail brand. There are another issue is long term reliability a problem with third-party generic even kingston's. I had few generics die and will not do that again.

Yet, besides OEM memory modules there are 2 more that is known good to have are Kingston and Mushkin, had them so many of them with perfect compatibility and long term is excellent. Worked on and owned more than 20 computers personally over the years (29 years). Not mention yet more computers that I got my hands on them for work too.

Honestly, I wish I wrote a mini article on choosing good memory modules.

What should be like this, ignore the chips labels, pay attention to stickers then verify it is same for the memory chips next.

If you see a Infineon chips this is what you should see on sticker also. This means it is OEM.

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/256MB-PC2700-33 ... SwaadapIDC

Business computers often partially or completely ignore the SPD data is if not in JEDEC spec but I had that happen on G.Skill. Yet but would not start with pair of G.Skill even on Asus, HP etc, but one piece will work and what is the point? Besides, I always install in pairs even two different set of matched pairs or four matched sets to enable dual channel mode.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Not on the stick. But because the photo they used is not what you receive, but a stock photo with Infineon board and chips.
False advertising on eBay.
