T43p & FireGL V3200: Good idea to repsste the paste between the heat spreader and the die?
My T43p has a gpu that idles at around 50-55C no matter how I repaste on the gpu heat spreader. in comparison with the same heatsink, LCD and same CPU, my T43 with its X300 idles in the 30s to 40s.
So is it a good idea to repaste the thermal paste between the heat spreader and the actual die? If so, what material is the heat spreader made of and is it safe to use liquid metal?

I'd stay away from that path.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 14, 2018 12:20 amMy T43p has a gpu that idles at around 50-55C no matter how I repaste on the gpu heat spreader. in comparison with the same heatsink, LCD and same CPU, my T43 with its X300 idles in the 30s to 40s.

Using Notebook Hardware Control to undervolt/underclock the system does wonders on these machines IME.

Problem with any cooling limited T4x series is not enough aluminum fins surface area, rather go and get 15" R52 chassis with GPU then transplant your T43p motherboard into R52 chassis, this will net you a 100% copper heatsink of better construction with taller copper fins resulting in much better heatsink action to handle the T43p heat and help to knock down hot 50C GPU.
I have done that with one of 15" R52 using a T42 motherboard with ATI 9600 GPU. I do not understand about Lenovo not choosing decent mid range 128bit VRAM GPUs (except for T530), and I also not understanding why both R52/T43 got weak, low end x300 where x600 can do better for not much more heat. Only way is poorly made D810 and x600.
For T60 should had been x1600 not x1400.

I have been unable to find a longfan from a DGPU R52. I wouldn't mind this acquisition for my R50p which gets by on its original DGPU passive cooler interfaced with a thermal pad!! A bit stupid, but less so than the A31p which has NO GPU HEATSINK OF ANY KIND.
The dedicated T40, R50, T60, R60, and Z60 series use a thermal pad between the DGPU heat spreaders and the Heatsink fan. You should not put thermal paste between the heat spreader and the thermal pad. Replacing the thermal pad with a new superior thermal pad, or replacing it with Copper Shims + Thermal Paste are the ideal replacements, but to what effect? Replacement of thermal pad with Copper Shim or a penny + Thermal Paste worked wonders on T60p, no reason it should not help T43p or T42p. Can you find copper of the correct height?

I did buy two R52 with GPU from ebay this way and rebuild with your choice of motherboard. Easier this way and cheaper.
I need to clarify on your comments:
TPFanatic's

T4x and R5x either is simple GPU with little heatspreaders but some of higher end GPUs includes a aluminum plate glued atop the GPU with a metal cross inserted between GPU's ram chips, I inserted thinnest copper piece (0.100mm) plus thermal compound under copper sheet and the GPU's heatspreader so to compress bit more of long heatsink's old thermal pad. The R6x, T6x does not have heatspreaders on any of chip dies. Optimal method is shim the GPU with less than 1mm copper piece and use a thermal pad for the northbridge only. Z series used rigid heatsink for all CPU, northbridge and x600 GPU with aluminum heatspreader and takes special considerations to do it properly much like the T4x/R5x with GPU.The dedicated T40, R50, T60, R60, and Z60 series use a thermal pad between the DGPU heat spreaders and the Heatsink fan.
