Error 1802 on IBM T30
Error 1802 on IBM T30
I re-installed Windows, and what I thought were the correct drivers for my T30. Apparently, I installed the wrong drivers for either the LAN or the internal wireless card. On a restart, the system wouldn't even post. Instead, it beeped and then showed "Error 1802: Unauthorized network card installed..." Has anyone else experienced this problem? I can't seem to fix it, since the system won't even post. Help needed, and soon. I'm typing this on a borrowed laptop.
Wrong drivers couldn't cause it - an unauthorised firmware upgrade on the card might though.
My reason for saying to pull the card as it would allow the machine to POST and therefore allow the BIOS update.
If you are not comfortable removing the card then possibly the best idea would be to get in touch with ThinkPad support to have it serviced.

I owned one of these machines with that wireless card. Unscrew the cover, unplug the tiny wires (taking note where they go) and unclip the two side clips. The card pops up and you gently pull it out.
If this does not describe your machine, then it is a very different T30 to the ones I have known (and then sorry if I provided the wrong info).

I see the clips, those won't be a problem. The wires, however, don't seem to unplug. Rather, they look soldered to the card. I don't want to mess with those. Should I just pull the HDD, wipe it, and then put it back in the laptop? That way, I could install the correct driver from IBM's site, I guess.
*sigh*
This is not a driver issue - it is a POST 'error' code and the BIOS does not care about windows drivers.
The only thing it could be is if the drivers you installed also updated the firmware for the card to generic Cisco firmware. If this is the case then unfortunately you cannot update the firmware on the card without the card being in the machine so you would need to find another way round the 1802; there are utilities which do this but I have not tried it myself.
There is always the possibility that it is a hardware problem with the card or that somehow it is not the correct card - do you have the FRU number for it?

you're not alone... i understand what you're saying.snife wrote:It cannot be a driver issue - not sure about your particular case but 1802 errors happen with or without HDDs. Maybe the card wasn't seated properly.
is it possible that you ran teh "1802 hack" .COM file in your previous install? look for that file (search the forums... it's here somewhere), run it from Win XP, turn off, and then put the card back in. you should have no conflicts then

Odd that the problem could just reappear like that but i'm not going to start
Anyway i found a link to more info at:

Would assume all it needs is a dos prompt so you could boot into your predesktop either and either choose the 'Recover To Factory Options' and press Alt-F3 to exit to DOS (this is not running a recovery, just using the recovery program to load a version of DOS) or run diagnostics and you can get a command prompt from the Utility menu of PC Doctor.
However, i am not willing to try running this as i don't like messing about with the BIOS as it can be dangerous.

You're right; I can mess up the system by tweaking the BIOS, but my problem is much simpler--I don't know how to run a program from DOS in XP. I can't boot into DOS from XP, as far as I know. If anyone has a solution, please share it.snife wrote:Odd that the problem could just reappear like that but i'm not going to start![]()

Go to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and download Bart's PE Builder. Find someone who has a Window XP Pro SP1 (at least) machine with a CD writer. Read the Doc's and make an XP Pro SP1 bootable CD. Boot the ThinkPad and run DOS from there. ... JD Hurst
Yeah unfortunately that is the third revision of the Cisco card (intended for R4* and X3* systems) - the one that should be on the T30 is the second revision (FRU 26P8319) so the 1802 is valid.
Looks like you will have to either get a new card or hack the BIOS - i would probably complain to eBay through payment protection though.

evil: O.K. so you've decided to install or upgrade your IBM T30 (2366/83G) with a (Intel 2915ABG) mini-pci wireless network card. But this error stops you dead in your tracks:- (1802 Unauthorized network card is plugged in. Power off and remove the Mini PCI network card.) DON'T PANIC: Remove the mini pci card, download this file http://jcnp.pku.edu.cn/~shadow/1802/no-1802.com and burn to cd, boot your from cd-rom with your win xp inserted, select 'R' for repair, wait 5 seconds
then press 1, (press enter) for admin password, you are now in DOS mode, type D: (press enter), you now need to open the cd-rom it may not open via the eject button so pop a paper clip into the tiny manual eject hole near the eject button, insert your copy of NO-1802.COM then type NO-1802.COM (press enter). That’s it your done
insert your mini-pci wireless network card and load software.

I have a friend with a T30 -- bought refurbished from very respectable New York's "J & R" -- that's had this problem twice.
The first time they gave him a replacement machine. Now after 2 months of use, it's happened again: the 1802 error.
It won't allow booting to an alternate device, at least while the card is still in the machine. Hitting F12 (or whatever it is) for use alternate boot device pulls up a blank screen.
I'm betting I can help my friend boot to DOS (I can lend him the floppy drive that fits in the DVD bay, and I have a bootable floppy made with my T30). I'm not sure what booting to DOS means, especially in this case -- very possibly if the hard drive is accessible, it will be IBM's boot sector, and not the "C:" he usually sees on start up.
Could I download a firmware or bios upgrade and get the T30 to install it using a floppy? Might that fix this problem?
Very weird he should have this problem 2x, and that the problem should start 2 months after his replacement T30 was working fine.
