T42 booting problem

#1 Post by DDJ » Sun Jun 26, 2005 8:12 pm

Hy, I`m new here and also in the Notebooks area, i just get one of this babys (almoust 1 month now), I had no problems till yesterday, when my XP get freezed, and then i had to turn off pressing like 5 seconds the on/off button.
After this i can`t turn on this thing again, i press the on/off button, the battery led turn on green and the system start to boot but show me nothing in screen, just a black screen, i can hear fan noise very low, hdd starting (but no access), if present CD reading or trying to boot and so, but no image at all and just stop at this point, nothing gets hot or work after that.

Obs: My XP setup is a fresh one, reinstaled by me, and work fine, well till this crash :P, but i can`t try to reinstall the IBM one, i formated my HDD 2 days after get this Notebook, the IBM install have too many stuffs installed and make the machine very slow.

Any tips?

Try removing the battery, hold the on/off button ON for 30 sec. This drains any residual power and resets the machine. Then reinsert the battery, plug in the AC adaptor and try again.

I'm not sure, but have you tried pressing and holding the Access IBM button while you turn on your laptop? If that comes up, maybe you have a software issue with Windows. It is my understanding that even if you reformated your hard drive, you could still access the HPA (hidden protected area) of your hard drive, which is on a different partition, not visible to Windows. If you can access this, you could restore factory contents to bring your laptop to the software state as it came from IBM. However this will erase everything you may have put on your hard drive since you did your fresh install.

It's also possible that your hard drive has died, and in that case, the above solution would not work. Of course you could have a different hardware problem as well.

Yes I already did, the problem is when you press the IBM button, i guess this trig a process to access the hiden partition that IBM put in the end of the ThinkPad HDDs, but for me this is uselles now, cos I not just reformated my HDD, i repartitioned the disk and have 5 partitons, with Debian, BeOS, XP pro and soon a Amitlhon setup too.

I asked to a Friend that works at IBM and he told me that where the problem probably lies is in the Embedded Controller ho dont allow anything to start in my T42, anyway Ill send it to IBM in 2 days.
