T42 or T43?

#1 Post by altofaia » Mon Jun 27, 2005 4:55 am

Hi
I am new here. Just about to buy my new thinkpad.
I've reading some reviews and your opininions on the T43 and the noise problem...

I am about to decide between T42 2373F7G (1.8 Ghz at 400Mhz) or the
T43 2668F5G (1.86 Ghz at 533 Mhz). Any opinion on these two?

Is the noise on the T43 that bad? Or the extra speed compensates for that?

Thanks

I have not noticed any unusual fan noise in my T43.

I don't think that you would notice much increase in speed for the T43 over the T42 (in this case).

The specs comparision indciates that the T42 has a better screen resolution, a larger hard drive and a DVD recorder, wihich would seem to give it the advantage when comparing these two.

The higher (and better) screen resolution on the T42 would be the determining factor for me if I had to choose between these two.

I just received my T42P (2373-GVU) a few minutes ago. I also have a T43 (2668-73U).

So far the T42P is quiter. It's been on for about 25 minutes and the fan has not come on while on the T43 the fan come son after 10-15 minutes, even on idle.

T42P is noticeably faster and better graphics. NOW this can be contributed to the fact that it is a 42"P" therefore keep in mind that it has a better graphics card and faster hard drive 6072k. Also the T42P is @ 1.80 MHz while the T43 is @ 2 MHz. I do not see the speed diff at all if anything the T42P is faster as noted above.

They are both fine machines from what I can see. But it seems like the T43 I received was a lemon  (hdd was making too much noise, USBs did not work, and popping sound on the speaker, I did not want to deal with all the replacements and wanted to take my chance on the T42P)

Also the keyboard is better for my taste on the T42P. But that's just a mater of preference I guess (...as with everything else in choosing the right laptop)

I believe I made the correct decision based on my requirements.

Good Luck!!!

I had the same issue -- check out the following.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

I went for the T42 -- just didn't want the extra noise.

good luck -- it's a tough choice... :)
T42 - 1.7GHz - 1GB - 60GB 72k - 1400x1050 - 14.1" - 32MB Radeon - DVD Burn - G/B/Blue/Finger.

Not really, the general consensus is that the T43's don't work as intended/expected

You laid out serious wedge on a T43 so I don't expect you to give it a slagging.

and i don't expect you as a T42 owner to think differently.
by the way that consensus you talking about is between the few super picky people and the non T43 owners . Most of the owners are just not part of this forum. Or just not writing anything about it . people write when they complain about something and not when everything is fine.

so if you have 100 happy people with this products that not bothering to write anything about it , and then you got 5 that are unhappy and they do write about it. then you got your "consensus" - and usually this is how things works.

I used to work for IBM up until last Friday. I'm sticking to my side seeing as I've seen all the [censored] that's going on first hand.

Totally agree about picky people though as they are mainly the sort of who could have £100,000,000 in the bank and still find something to complain about. Personally speaking, I'd have this sort of customer shot if I could, but that's just me :P

is the T42 the only one currently available with an uxga 1600x1200 screen?

My A21p is getting sort of old and I dread having a screen with less resolution than that.

The Panel on my desktop is 1600x1200 (Dell 2001FP) and I have the SXGA+ 14.1 inch LCD on my laptop, and I find that for a laptop the 1400x1050 is really nice, and I would rather have the smaller screen and increased portability than the 1600x1200 which would be I think much to crazy for a 14 inch screen.
