Hard Disk in the Ultrabay

#1 Post by spoon » Tue Jun 28, 2005 4:09 pm

Hi everyone,
well, my T42 (2378fvu) has not enough room with a HD of 40GB. I've been considering several possibilities, and I think the best is to buy an Ultrabay Slim adapter and the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 80 GB.
I come up with several questions:

a) The extra weight of the adapter+HD instead of the CD/DVD drive is noticeable?
b) The transfer rate of the HD in the Ultrabay is larger than an external HD via USB port?
c) Is it better to replace the built-in 40GB for the momentus, and put the old 40GB in the Ultrabay?. If I do that, do I loose my warranty?
d) Does the HD in the ultrabay produce an extra heat?. Is it always running?

I think that's all. Thanks in advance

For all intents and purposes it runs the same as the internal drive so would be on the entire time and is faster than USB in my experience.

It will create more heat than the optical drive but nothing to be concerned about.

I would recommend putting the 80gb drive internally as it is better to have more storage space with the drive you will always have with the ThinkPad. I use the second hdd adapters all the time - i think they are invaluable but there are always occasions where you want your optical drive with you so i store all my important stuff on the primary hdd.

It wont invalidate your warranty but obviously the warranty for the machine only covers the original 40GB drive. If however, your new drive caused damage to the machine then theoretically this damage wouldn't be covered by warranty but again this is not of concern as 1) Its very unlikely and 2) They would never be able to prove that it caused the damage.

thanks for your input, snife.
This is one of the moments in which I feel really happy to have bought a Thinkpad. I travel very often, and I was thinking I should buy a cumbersome external enclosure, but the Ultraby is really worthwhile.
What about the weight? Do you note a significative difference with respect to the CD/DVD drive?. BTW what's the best place to get a good deal for the Ultrabay adpater?. Regards!

You wont notice the difference in weight - i don't have weight measurements with me at the moment but i reckon the ultrabay with drive is actually lighter than most of the optical drives.

Don't know about good deals as i don't have to buy mines (get them at work) but i normally keep an eye on eBay when i want a good deal on anything.

I don't notice much weight difference between the Ultrabay HD and the CD/DVD drive.

I find that the price from Lenovo/IBM direct (free shipping) is comparable or better than the prices on Ebay after shipping is included. It is $38.25 from Lenovo/IBM through one of the credit card discounts.
edit: part # is 62P4554.

Do both, CD's/DVD's are cheap! I do a massive backup about every 9-12mos on DVD+R's and then have a couple HDD's that I back up to in the interum.

Use good quality DVDs for archiving and hard drive for faster regular backups.
