SXGA or XGA for a 14" T42?

#1 Post by ating » Wed Jun 29, 2005 8:31 am

Hello guys,

I am looking to buy a new laptop for grad school, but I can't decide to go with SXGA or XGA. I am not a gamer, so I really don't know if SXGA's worth the extra money. What about Blue tooth? Do you guys find it useful? Hope you guys can help me out.

Bluetooth IMHO is a waste of time - its one of those features you want but probably cant think of a valid reason. Unless you intend to use WAN connections (mobile phone) for the internet or want to use a bluetooth headset then there is no point. I think bluetooth will die soon anyway and be replaced with wireless USB.

I'm a big fan of SXGA+ but it really depends on what you do with the machine - anything where a lot of stuff must be viewed on screen (like databases/spreadsheets/cad/programming and anything from adobe/macromedia) you will benefit from having more space to fit stuff on the screen. If your just word processing and browsing the web then XGA is fine

My T41 is XGA, and I have access to another laptop with 15" SXGA. For me, everthing is too small on that one, and I'm always, upping font size one size on virtually every webpage I see. I know a lot of people here like SXGA, but they're the younger ones. So I guess that decision rests with the state of your eyesight.

If you buy SXGA and can't live with it, changing the screen resolution to non-native XGA really doesn't work well. You should spend some time with friend's computers, and see what *you* can handle, rather than just wing it on the advice of other people.
