No Bluetooth?

#1 Post by wjp3 » Wed Jun 29, 2005 8:34 am

Seems that IBM has dropped Bluetooth on their newer TP's. I just got a T43 (2687-D4U) and it's missing... kind of disappointing.

They haven't dropped bluetooth but it is not a standard feature: some models have modem only cards, some have modem/bluetooth combo cards - more of the p models have it but a lot of non p models have it too.

It never ceases to amaze me that people spending what a ThinkPad costs don't bother to check that they are buying what they require.

I knew exactly what I was getting, just couldn't find the option for Bluetooth...

When you configure your own system - Bluetooth is not an option for the T43. Some of the pre-configured T43's have Bluetooth, but most don't. IBM/Lenovo told me that most people don't want/use it.

I have it on my T42 -- but have yet to use it. Maybe one day...

Bluetooth is mostly useless, I have a bluetooth mouse that is pretty cool but I could have gotten a wireless RF mouse and just had to deal with a dongle in the USB port and gotten essentially the same effect. Also in the future I might get a bluetooth headset for using skype but again there are other ways to achieve the same result. The only thing that bluetooth would be really useful for is if you have a bluetooth phone and you want internet anywhere, otherwise most other bluetooth uses can be accomplished in other ways.

Yeah, I use a Bluetooth-enabled phone and have gotten accustomed to syncing it with my computer for contact management. I also like the capability to pairing and using the cellphone to dialup online, when there's not a T-Mobile HotSpot near.

Too bad Lenovo cut it from options for configured systems. But, I have a PCMCIA 3Com Bluetooth card, and since I don't use the slot for anything else, I will still have the capability. It's just not as slick.

Otherwise, this is the best laptop I've ever used.
